What's involved with this role: Council Tax Officer Job Ref: Luton 123459 Pay Rate: £20 per hour PAYE Hours per week: 37 Monday – Friday, normal working hours This opening assignment is for 1 month Luton LU1 2BQ Office based Summary of what the candidate must have to apply : To apply for this role you must have experience working in a high-volume billing or revenues environment, strong administrative accuracy, and confidence managing amendments, payments, and customer correspondence. You must be able to deal sensitively with customers, maintain accurate records, follow established billing procedures, and manage a busy workload to tight deadlines. Knowledge of Council Tax processes or Local Taxation regulations is highly beneficial. The role: You will support the full billing, administration, and collection function for Council Tax. This covers processing credit balances, issuing and amending bills, actioning direct debit changes, assessing entitlement to discounts and exemptions, and maintaining accurate manual and computer records. You will also assist with statutory relief determinations, make referrals for inspections, and help deliver key performance indicators related to collection, correspondence, and response times. Key accountabilities: Lead day-to-day Council Tax processing including refunds, suspense items, transfers, amendments, and Direct Debit maintenance. Manage all incoming correspondence, updating records and systems accurately and within agreed targets. Assist in determining statutory discounts, reliefs, and exemptions, ensuring assessments are made lawfully and correctly. Ensure Council Tax lists and records are updated to required standards, including reconciling with Valuation Office totals. Support the delivery of performance standards across collection, response times, and customer contact. Requirements/key criteria: Proven experience working in an office environment with both manual and computerised systems. Demonstrated experience in a high-volume billing environment. Experience working in Local Taxation is desirable. Strong verbal and written communication skills for dealing with a wide range of customers. Ability to use tact and sensitivity when handling difficult or upset customers. Ability to maintain accurate records and manage a workload to meet deadlines and targets. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide confidently. Ability to use own initiative (desirable). Demonstrated knowledge of high-volume billing procedures. Knowledge of Local Taxation regulations is desirable. Some understanding of equality principles in the workplace.
