An exciting opportunity has become available at Stepping Hill Hospital for a Children and Young Person Mental Health Nurse to join the welcoming Treehouse team. This role is based within the Treehouse children’s Unit, working alongside the Children’s Safeguarding Team. You will be fully supported by the Senior Nursing Team, Matron for ADHD and the Name Nurse for Safeguarding Children.

You will be the specialist lead for children and young people presenting at the hospital with mental health and associated behavioural and emotional issues in the Emergency Department, on the Paediatric Unit and, for those young people aged 16-17 years, the adult wards.

You will work collaboratively with relevant disciplines, to be accountable for own decision making and clinical practice, care planning and intervention. You will ensure joined‑up, seamless care and service provision for vulnerable children and young people, especially those with mental health and associated behavioural and emotional difficulties.

You will develop knowledge and skills of staff across the Trust to support safe, high quality and evidence-based care for vulnerable children and young people, in order to develop and enhance services for this patient group throughout their hospital attendance, admission, discharge and follow-up care planning.


Main duties of the job

Lead on the further development and delivery of the children and young people’s mental health agenda; working closely alongside colleagues in all Paediatric areas to ensure timely and robust assessments and referrals are undertaken, in line with current policy and NICE guidelines.

Lead on the development of processes and procedures for those children and young people presenting in the Emergency Department or admitted onto the Paediatric Ward with mental health, behavioural and emotional needs.

Support the Paediatric services across the organisation to plan/organise actions to maximise the health of individuals, including multi-disciplinary/agency referrals and discharge planning; working closely with community services.

Maintain a highly visible, clinical presence and ensure others benefit from expertise through ‘on-the-job’ education, teaching and advice.

Evaluate additional training needs and deliver training to enhance the knowledge and skills of staff across the Trust.

Be the specialist lead for hospital staff in the care of vulnerable children and young people with mental health and associated behavioural and emotional issues and ensure engagement and links between all services is efficient and effective across all relevant services.

Job responsibilities

To work closely with mental health services to support Paediatric and Emergency Department staff to facilitate safe discharge planning for vulnerable children and young people; working closely alongside relevant services and care providers, to ensure safe and timely follow-up arrangements are in place and fully agreed by all relevant agencies and services.

To support the Paediatric services across the organisation to plan/organise actions to maximise the health of individuals, including multi-disciplinary/agency referrals and discharge planning; working closely with community services.

The Trust is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment and promote safeguarding by implementing the Trusts policies and procedures, acting promptly on concerns, communicating effectively and sharing information appropriately.

If successful this vacancy will require an enhanced DBS check at a cost of £54.90. This cost will be deducted from your first Trust salary.

In addition to this it will be a condition of your employment that you will join the DBS update service and pay the annual subscription fee of £16.


Person Specification


Education & Qualifications

* Registered Mental Health Nurse and/or RSCN/RN-Child/RGN with current registration
* Qualification (educated) to Degree level or evidence of equivalent experience
* RMN or RLDN or RN-Child with significant experience in Children’s mental health including Acute or Community settings
* Train the Trainer qualification
* Qualification (educated) to Masters level, or evidence of equivalent experience


Knowledge

* Clear understanding of clinical governance and risk management process
* Knowledge of relevant regional and national initiatives


Experience

* Evidence of enhanced knowledge of safeguarding children policies, processes and operational practice
* Relevant experience in Paediatric clinical areas
* Proven experience of practice development including training of multi-disciplinary staff
* Experience of developing and monitoring guidelines
* Relevant experience at senior nursing level
* Proven experience of implementing clinical governance


Skills

* Clinical expert in CYP Mental Health
* Able to supervise colleagues and lead education
* Able to demonstrate sound application of theory to practice
* Critical appraisal skills and understanding of research methodology

£49,387 to £56,515 a year pro rata per annum
