Principal Ecologist
Location: Perth or Glasgow, Scotland (Hybrid Working)
Reporting to: Ecology Business Manager
Salary: £50,000 - £60,000 DOE

The Role
We're looking for a Principal Ecologist to lead the delivery of high-quality ecological projects and help shape the future of our Ecology team.
You'll:
1. Lead and manage ecological projects across the UK
2. Collaborate with in-house disciplines like Construction, Aquatics, and Hydrology
3. Develop strong client relationships and contribute to business growth
4. Mentor and support junior team members
5. Help shape internal processes and strategic direction
Key Responsibilities
6. Lead on:
7. Ecological Impact Assessments (EIA)
8. Habitats Regulations Assessments (HRA)
9. Biodiversity Net Gain Assessments
10. Protected Species Surveys and Licensing
11. Preliminary Ecological Appraisals and mitigation strategies
12. Write fee proposals and manage bids
13. Coordinate with clients, in-house teams, and sub-contractors
14. Review reports and ensure project quality
15. Contribute to team development and operational improvements
16. Maintain professional standards aligned with CIEEM/IEMA/CIWEM codes
What We're Looking For
Essential:
17. Degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, or related subject
18. CIEEM membership (working toward Chartership)
19. Holder of at least one protected species licence
20. Strong knowledge of UK legislation and planning policy
21. Excellent report writing and quality assurance skills
22. Confident project and team leadership
23. Experience with fee proposals and commercial work
24. Strong communication and organisational skills
25. Full UK driving licence
Desirable:
26. Experience using project management tools (e.g., WorkflowMax)
27. CSCS or EMSS card
28. LANTRA 4x4 training
29. Emergency Outdoor First Aid certification
