Job Summary

An exciting opportunity for a Band 3 Health Care Support Worker has arisen in the Merthyr and Cynon LPMHSS. We are looking for a reliable, motivated and enthusiastic individual to join the team.

The applicant will be expected to demonstrate excellent interpersonal and organisational skills along with the ability to use their own initiative. The post holder will deliver psychologically informed interventions and education both 1:1 and in groups to those aged 17 and above and will support individuals throughout a prescribed structured intervention after they have been assessed in LPMHSS. They will educate individuals on skills that help them manage their own mental health and have a reasonable understanding of psychoeducation and psychological interventions drawn from the principles of CBT, CFT, BSFT, DBT and computer-based CBT.


Main Duties of the Job

Working within the legislative framework of Part One of the Mental Health (Wales) Measure, to improve access to mental health support at a primary care level for people with mild to moderate or severe but stable needs.

The post holder will provide support and guidance to people suffering with mental illness and/or distress, understanding the impact of mental illness on the individual and their family/carers. They will provide support to an allocated group of patients with a range of mild to moderate mental health care needs and assist their recovery, helping them maintain their own community networks.

Job Responsibilities

* Deliver short‑term psychologically informed psycho‑education to those within the definition of Part 1 of the Welsh Measure as prescribed and supported by the registered practitioner.
* Provide support to service users on an individual and on a group basis within the community / base setting.
* Provide a range of information and support for evidence‑informed, high‑volume, low‑intensity psychological treatments face‑to‑face (both individually, in small‑group contexts and in large‑group contexts, or by telephone or online).
* Support people with common mental health problems in the self‑management of their recovery using guided self‑help.
* Engage service users in their care.
* Deliver psychologically informed interventions and education both 1:1 and in groups to those aged 17 and above.
* Support individuals throughout a prescribed structured intervention after assessment in LPMHSS and educate them on skills to manage mental health.


Person Specification


Essential Qualifications

* NVQ Level 3 or equivalent


Essential Knowledge

* Understanding and experience of working with mental health issues
* Understanding the principles of psycho‑education and the role in supporting people’s recovery


Desirable Knowledge

* Understanding of psychological models
* Welsh skills desirable (Level 3/B2 or above)


Desirable Experience

* Experience working within a group setting and in the community
* Understanding of psychological models
* Experience working within mental health across the age ranges—adult/older adult
