Job summary

Our SuRNICC at Glan Clwyd Hospital is the largest Neonatal Unit in North Wales. We are the focal point of the network of newborn care across the region.

Our spacious, state of the art unit has 5 intensive care cots, 5 high-dependency cots and 9 special care cots. With a team of Neonatal Consultants, ANNPs, Nurses and AHPs, we provide care for sick and preterm infants above 26 weeks' gestation from across North Wales and beyond. We also run the North Wales Neonatal Transport Service from Glan Clwyd, which the post holder will receive training and undertake supervised transfers once the MSc in Advanced Practice has been completed.

During this post, the post holder will be undertaking their academic studies at Masters Level (MSc Advanced Practice) at a Higher Education Establishment, namely Salford University, as a full-time course over 1 year. Alongside the academic studies, they will be working clinically primarily within the SuRNICC at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd. Part of this will take the form of obtaining competencies specific to their area of practice, which will be developed locally to meet the needs of the service. During this post, the post holder will have a Consultant (Neonatologist) as a clinical supervisor, who will support them in their development, although the post holder will work clinically with the whole team. They will also be supported by the team of ANNPs, and be allocated an ANNP mentor.

Main duties of the job

This trainee post will have a variable term, depending on acquisition of the required competencies for the established Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioner role. This will not exceed 5 years from the commencement of academic training. It is expected that the post holder will complete the required competencies within a 6 to 18-month period post awarding of MSc Advanced Practice. Once demonstrated consolidation in line with the 4 pillars of advanced practice as outlined in the HEIW framework, then the post holder will progress to Band 8a.

Reporting directly to the Neonatal consultants and ANNPs, the post holder will be an expert in neonatal conditions, complex decision-making skills and clinical competencies for expanded scope of practice. Required to provide specialist neonatal advice to patients, carers and colleagues with regards to the diagnosis and treatment of complex neonatal conditions. This will include the provision of advice to neonatal staff in the care and treatment of babies.
