Specialty doctor in anaesthesia

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to provide preoperative assessment, perioperative and postoperative care to patients across both sites of this busy Teaching Hospital Trust. This will require some ability to work independently although Consultant cover is always available. The successful candidate will be expected to provide anaesthesia for the broad range of surgical specialties on site, including General surgery, Urology, Orthopaedics and Trauma, Ophthalmology and Gynaecology, as well as Hepato‑Biliary, Vascular, and Major Head & Neck services. The on‑call commitment will be on a 1:11 basis (non‑prospective) based at Burnley General Hospital, providing emergency services for Obstetrics and Gynaecology covered by a two‑tier rota with distant consultant supervision. The post holder will be resident and support the trainee rota by providing emergency gynaecology services alongside support for the obstetric unit. Theatre sessions will be flexible in site and speciality according to negotiation and the requirements of the service.

Requirements

• Applicants will hold full registration with GMC and extensive experience in obstetric anaesthesia.
• Ability to communicate with patients and relatives effectively and with empathy.
• Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with colleagues and staff in all disciplines to facilitate best patient care.
• Ability to work in a team and evidence of such, MBChB or equivalent.
• Full registration with General Medical Council.
• Up to date revalidation.

Desirable criteria

• Primary FRCA.
• Educational Qualification: satisfactory completion of core training or equivalent in Anaesthesia and ICM, experience at specialty trainee level, substantial experience in general anaesthesia including practical experience in regional anaesthesia and invasive line insertion, with use of ultrasound.
• Understanding of and experience in performing audit.
• An understanding of the need for quality in health care and how this is evidenced.
• Understanding of clinical governance and risk management.
• Evidence of participation in audit that led to introduction of change.
• Evidence of involvement in quality improvement projects.
• Experience in appraisal and mentoring, clear commitment to lifelong learning.
• Experience of evidence based medicine.
• Ability to keep up to date in the speciality.
• Membership of appropriate postgraduate societies.
• Evidence of development of leadership within the work environment.
• IT skills and ability to use range of programs and software; appropriate UK professional registration.
