Gateshead Council is investing in the future of our cared-for children through a growing network of residential homes. With four established homes and two more on the way, we provide safe, nurturing environments where young people can rebuild trust, re-engage with education, and develop independence skills. Our homes are supported by a dedicated therapeutic team, including a mental health practitioner and psychologist, grounded in trauma-informed, strength-based care.
We are currently recruiting for:
Deputy Manager, 37 hours, Grade J
Salary £42,712 - £45,992 (including Children's Residential Allowance of £2,236.60 for evening and early morning shifts).
In addition to a competitive salary and residential allowance, you will receive two increments for weekend work, with a minimum of 10% of your hours scheduled for weekends. Sleep-in payments are also provided according to the rota.
This is an exciting opportunity to manage, support, and supervise residential child care officers to deliver an outstanding service to young people.
Our homes provide mid to long-term care for children and young people aged 12 to 17 at admission. They operate 365 days a year, including bank holidays. The successful candidate will be expected to work days, evenings, weekends, bank holidays, and sleep in on a rota basis.
You will need an NVQ Level 3 in Children and Young People or Level 3 Diploma for Children and Young People Workforce, or equivalent, along with at least 2 years’ experience working with young people in a residential setting. Experience in report writing, partnership working with parents, social workers, and other agencies is essential.
You should have knowledge of current child care legislation, including the Care Standards Act, Children’s Homes Regulations, and Quality Standards. An understanding of issues related to looked after children, emotional and behavioral difficulties, trauma, attachment, child protection, missing from care, and sexual exploitation is also required.
