To provide a full range of high quality direct patient support services throughout the Trust, ensuring the team's quality standards and service delivery expectations are consistently achieved. Driven by a desire for innovation and transformation the Patient Services Assistant (PSA) role was created within the Estates and Facilities Division to encompass a range of traditional ancillary support services, such as patient portering and domestic cleaning. The Trust believes the new way of working offered by the PSA will support its focus to enhance patient experience; improve patient flow throughout the hospital as well as offer staff the skills, experience and training to deal with the changing demands in a busy acute hospital setting. Each PSA will be allocated to a Zone within the hospital which meets the needs of the service. He/she will foster a close working relationship with the shift supervisor, who will be responsible for delegating, supervising and monitoring the work outputs of a team of PSAs within a Zone.


Responsibilities

* Plan and manage own workload and be responsible for all duties required under each shift, working efficiently without compromising quality.
* Respond in a timely manner to requests for deep cleans and isolation discharge cleans.
* Participate in service improvement events and remain open-minded when supporting change initiatives.
* Perform all allocated tasks within the allotted time, maintaining quality standards set by the Division.
* Contribute to maintaining a safe working environment for self and the zonal team.
* Perform duties in accordance with hospital policies, guidelines and relevant legislation, including Infection Control Policies.
* Ensure all cleaning standards are maintained to reduce the risk of hospital‑acquired infections.
* Seek any necessary information to perform the full job role in a competent and safe manner.
* Report all incidents/injuries to the appropriate officer in a timely manner and in accordance with procedures.
* Attend all mandatory training as scheduled and all other relevant training required by the job role.
* Contribute to effective communication, facilitating teamwork and cooperation within the zone team, ward/unit and with other departments.
* Use radio, phone, bleep, computer or other devices in accordance with Trust information governance guidelines.
* Move/transport patients safely from one location to another within the hospital, using established safe methods for wheelchairs, beds and trolleys.
* Perform all cleaning tasks within the Trust, covering wards, clinics, sanitary areas, offices and communal spaces.
* Safely move and decontaminate beds and other furniture.
* Move deceased patients in an appropriate and sensitive manner.
* Deliver and collect patient meal trolleys and medical gas canisters as required.
* Remove dirty curtains and hang fresh clean curtains, using ladders where necessary.
* Buff, scrub and redress floors as well as carpet clean using appropriate machinery.


Team Working

* Work as a member of a team to provide effective patient support service to a zoned area.
* Contribute to the operational functioning of the unit and actively participate in the achievement of the unit's quality plan.
* Participate in emergency and contingency action and coordination, including fire evacuation and helicopter support.
* Take reasonable care of oneself and be mindful of the consequences of one's actions on others and the Trust.
* Assist with the orientation and induction of new staff to the Division.


Qualifications (Required)

* Level 2 qualification in English and Maths.
* Proven ability to understand and comply with detailed procedures, signs and instructions.
* Proven ability to organise and prioritise own workload and follow written instructions.
* Proven ability to adapt to new ideas, knowledge and skills whilst remaining flexible.
* Able to take instructions.
* Proven ability to keep information confidential.


Desirable Criteria

* Previous experience of working with patients/clients.
* Previous cleaning, and/or portering experience.
