Overview

As part of our recruitment process for this bailiff vacancy, we aim to support candidates by sharing interview questions related to the assessed behaviours before interviews. Candidates will be notified when they must book an interview slot and will receive the questions ahead of time to reflect on relevant examples from their experience. The panel will ask follow‑up questions during the interview.

Role Summary

You will be visiting people in their homes and businesses, explaining to them why you are visiting and what options are available to help resolve matters. You must demonstrate empathy for court users, be non‑judgmental, focus on carrying out your role whilst fully respecting the customers that you meet, and plan your days to manage your workload while coping with short‑notice changes. You will be trained in PPE and safety, and you must be familiar with using IT and the courts case‑management systems.


Responsibilities

* Communicate effectively, both written and verbal, to customers and judges.
* Handle difficult conversations and provide clear information quickly.
* Use own car or lease car (full UK driving licence required) and manage fuel allowances.
* Attend and actively contribute to hybrid working arrangements where applicable.
* Support colleagues with training and guidance on bailiff duties.
* Report and record outcomes of visits accurately.


Qualifications & Experience

* Great communication skills and the ability to provide information quickly and clearly.
* Commitment to providing a brilliant service for our customers.
* Ability to handle difficult conversations.
* Passion for supporting and helping people.
* Experience with technology for inputting, emails, and court case‑management systems.
* Full UK driving licence entitling you to drive permanently in Great Britain.
* Experience in a customer‑facing role or similar is desirable.


Working Arrangements & Flexibility

Standard full‑time working hours are 37 hours per week. HMCTS welcomes part‑time, flexible and job‑sharing working patterns, where they meet the demands of the role and business needs. All applications for part‑time, flexible and job‑sharing working patterns will be considered in accordance with the MoJ's Flexible Working policy. The minimum hours for part‑time would be 30 hours per week over 4 or 5 days.

MoJ offers a hybrid working arrangement where business need allows, with a minimum of 60% of working time spent in an office. Hybrid arrangements will be discussed and agreed with the successful candidate and reviewed regularly.


Skilled Worker Visa

This role does not meet the eligibility criteria for sponsorship if you are applying for a Skilled Worker Visa for the first time. Successful applicants must ensure the legal right to live and work in the UK and in the Civil Service. If you have held a Skilled Worker visa continuously since before 22 July 2025, eligibility will be assessed during vetting.

Interview dates are expected to take place on week commencing 21st April 2026. Requests for alternate dates or virtual interviews will be considered only in exceptional circumstances or reasonable adjustments.
