Location: Carlisle (Cumberland Council)
Salary: £32,061 – £32,597 per annum
Contract: Temporary, 12 months
Work hours: 37 hours per week (Full time)

About the role
Cumberland Council is looking for a dedicated Welfare Advice Officer to provide confidential, high‑quality welfare and benefits advice to residents across the Carlisle locality. You will work closely with vulnerable individuals, including the elderly, disabled, and housebound, offering support through face‑to‑face appointments, home visits, and tribunal representation.
Responsibilities
* Provide confidential, high‑quality welfare and benefits advice to residents.
* Conduct face‑to‑face appointments and home visits as required.
* Represent clients in tribunal procedures and advocate on their behalf.
* Collaborate with the welfare team to ensure seamless service delivery.
* Maintain accurate records of client interactions and advice given.
Qualifications and skills
* Strong communication skills and an empathetic, organised approach.
* Good understanding of the welfare benefits system and relevant regulations.
* Experience working in advisory or welfare roles, especially with vulnerable populations.
* Ability to work independently and as part of a supportive team.
* Commitment to preventing hardship and homelessness.

DBS checks
This role requires a DBS check. The level of check is an enhanced DBS check with a Children’s/Adults Barred List check. The role involves working in regulated activity with adults and/or children. It is an offence for people who are barred from working in regulated activity to apply for roles that require them to work unsupervised with adults and/or children.
