Overall Purpose
The Health and Safety Manager is the champion for driving a people centric safety culture. They will formulate, execute and sustain H&S improvement activities to “Wow” their internal customers. The Health and Safety Manager will drive continuous improvement in the development and execution of the Health and Safety Management System.
Accountabilities
1. Understand what working the Whitby Way means for H&S to bring it to life through your behaviours.
2. Work cross functionally to shape and take ownership for the Health and Safety improvement plan making direct links to the delivery of the company strategy.
3. Develop and maintain the H&S management system within the scope of legality, morality and financial viability.
4. Ownership of the development and maintenance of the electronic H&S system that supports daily H&S improvement activity.
5. Reporting to external parties in relation to our legal obligations.
Responsibilities
1. Work closely with internal customers to deliver their objectives as part of the wider business agenda.
2. Establish relationships with external stakeholders to ensure the ongoing smooth operation of the business.
3. Involvement in departmental continuous improvement systems, providing a H&S perspective to ensure a H&S culture throughout the business.
4. Be a Leader and role model, living the Company Values.
Essential Experience
* Working in a Health and Safety leadership position
* Achieving results across departments without direct authority
* An understanding of continuous improvement methods
* Working in an FMCG environment
Desirable Experience
* Working in food manufacturing environment covering 24-hour operations
* An understanding of working with insurance providers
* Working to the HSG65 standard
* Familiarity with RoSPA QSA audits

* Nebosh Certificate – Essential
* Nebosh Diploma – Desirable
What Good Looks Like
Ongoing development of the H&S culture within the Whitby Site.
The person will use the RoSPA QSA audit to externally benchmark the H&S management system to drive long‑term improvement in performance, developing actions to close gaps identified.
Leading without direct authority, the H&S Manager will create effective relationships with other leaders across the business to help empower those nearest the work to play their part in the functioning of the H&S management system.
The individual will have oversight of the quality of the inputs and outputs of Papaya, ensuring best practice is implemented in this system.
Having an outgoing and team‑based outlook, the individual will work the Whitby Way to deliver effective win‑win outcomes for both internal and external customers.

* Weekly Group Health and Safety Teams Meeting
* Regular attendance at Tier 2, 3 and 4 meetings
* Scheduled 1‑1’s with Manager
Roadmap – Health and Safety Management System
* Using RoSPA audit as a guideline, continue to enhance the group H&S management system.
* Win hearts and minds of people expected to interact with it to build a user‑centric system that is sustainable in the long term.
* Consider the requirements of NI law in the development of the group H&S management system.
Roadmap – Other areas of the business
* Use networking skills to keep abreast of company strategy and, where relevant, make positive H&S interventions to avoid firefighting further down the line.
* Bring in external expertise where required (from organisations such as BFFF) to enhance other projects within the business.
Training / skills enhancement
* Behavioural development using programmes such as Franklin Covey, Belbin and True North Excellence
* Professional development by joining the BFFF H&S members group and attending IOSH events
* Professional development by identifying areas of opportunity within circle of influence
