In this new and exciting role, you will work with communities, campaigners, and stakeholders to build trust, win hearts and minds, and inspire support for managing rain where it lands and protecting water quality in coasts and rivers. You will play a central role in shaping how Wessex Water is understood and trusted by the public, politicians, campaigners, and communities, particularly regarding storm overflows and water quality.
What you'll do
This is a people-focused, data-informed role responsible for communicating challenges and progress related to storm overflow discharges, societal shifts in rain management, and the company's initiatives on water resources, efficiency, and flooding. It involves managing sensitive and technical data, shaping public narratives on environmental issues like storm overflows. Other responsibilities include:
1. Building and maintaining trusted relationships with community groups, campaigners, NGOs, local authorities, media, and coastal users.
2. Leading engagement at events, tours, and briefings related to storm overflows and water quality.
3. Representing Wessex Water at forums such as Surfers Against Sewage, bathing water forums, and water quality groups.
4. Supporting the CEO Office and PR team with media responses, press releases, and customer communications.
5. Presenting storm overflow event duration monitoring data on public platforms.
6. Acting as a first point of contact and advisor on storm overflow engagement within Wessex Water.
7. Providing technical advice for customer services, communications, strategy, planning, and operations.
8. Engaging with regulators like the Environment Agency on policy and permits.
Skills and Experience
* Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills, especially in explaining complex issues to non-specialists.
* Credible, empathetic communicator and relationship builder.
* Experience in stakeholder engagement, public affairs, or environmental communications.
* Some technical knowledge of storm overflows, EDM data, and real-time monitoring systems.
* Understanding of environmental regulations (desirable).
* Knowledge of long-term planning frameworks (desirable).
* Ability to work across disciplines and advise at senior levels.
