About the role
Balfour Beatty Power T&D is currently looking for a Design Manager to join their business in Scotland.
Role Purpose
Manage delivery of Design on the Skye OHL and UGC projects, working closely with commercial, production, and engineering teams during both pre-construction and construction stages.
What you'll be doing
Accountabilities
* Manage development and implementation of design proposals, ensuring they meet customer requirements, including budget constraints, and present proposals for approval. The design should deliver:
* Safety in construction and use
* Quality within affordable parameters
* Ease of maintenance, energy efficiency, and minimal environmental impact
* Innovation to meet customer goals and positively impact the local community
* Manage and ensure effective briefing of the Design Teams
* Manage Subcontractor design packages and technical approvals
* Lead the development and management of the design deliverables programme, including:
* Ensuring a clear schedule of design deliverables
* Leading gate review activities for timely and appropriate sign-off at each project gate, with communication to project manager and principal design manager
* Coordinating and producing design data, reports, and documentation essential to the project and contractual requirements, and reporting progress against the programme
* Solicit and obtain advice on the 'buildability' of design proposals from design and construction teams
* Liaise with statutory bodies and authorities such as town planning, building control, and utility services
* Manage Change Control Process
* Support the implementation of BIM Common Data Environment and Workflows
* Lead Value Engineering and apply Lean construction techniques to save costs, reduce waste, and optimize construction
* Capture and share learning and best practices from the project across the business
* Contribute proactively to Risk and Value Management processes

Who we're looking for
This role requires proven experience in delivering design services during development and on-site during construction, with successful implementation of design strategies into construction practice.
Leadership skills in a matrix organization are essential to deliver design services timely, with a customer and sector focus. Good interpersonal and communication skills are required to build effective relationships under time pressure.
Knowledge of BIM is required. Experience with current construction contracts such as NEC3 is desirable.
HND or higher academic qualification.
Relevant professional membership (e.g., RIBA, BIBSE, IET) is recommended.
Excellent IT skills, including Microsoft Office, are essential. Numeracy and report writing skills are also required.
