Occupational Therapy Assistant Practitioner in Stroke Rehabilitation
Join to apply for the Occupational Therapy Assistant Practitioner in Stroke Rehabilitation role at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW) NHS Trust. The post is for a fixed term contract to cover maternity leave. The post would suit an experienced, motivated and passionate Occupational Therapy Assistant Practitioner to join our stroke therapy team, collaborating with Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists and Speech and Language Therapists. Contribution to support innovation and service development is encouraged from all team members.
Responsibilities
* To work independently, under the direction of HCPC registered Occupational Therapists, to perform specific tasks for an individual or group of patients as part of their assessment, rehabilitation and therapeutic care programmes.
* To work within protocols and competencies specific to this post and to act as first contact in specific situations.
* To conduct patient assessments and information gathering to identify needs, develop personalised treatment and care plans in collaboration with registered therapy staff, and review progress at regular intervals.
* To deliver treatment activities which may include following exercise and mobility programmes; educate patients and families about their situation and options for the future; and conduct community-based assessment and treatment.
* To support independence in activities of daily living, including self-care tasks, and to enable better access to the community by using and ordering appropriate equipment as required.
* To provide supervision through observation of practice and regular formal/informal training.
Skills, Knowledge and Qualifications
* Experience in rehabilitation and stroke or neuromedical care as a therapy assistant in the NHS or a similar environment; excellent interpersonal skills and patient-centred care; effective teamwork.
* Essential: experience and knowledge appropriate to the role; ability to work independently under supervision; good communication with patients and carers; patient flow within the stroke pathway.
* Desirable: experience in rehabilitation of stroke and neurological conditions; knowledge of exercise prescription; demonstrated goal setting with patients; community-based experience.
* Qualifications: Foundation degree or NVQ Level 3 / diploma in healthcare or equivalent, or significant experience in relevant settings. Desirable: undergraduate degree in a relevant subject; Level 5 diploma for assistant practitioners; attendance at appropriate professional courses.
* Aptitude and values: patient-centred approach, good organisational skills, computer literate (electronic patient record, MS Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams); ability to self-direct work.
* Disposition: ability to work in a diverse professional team; take instruction; problem solve; align with UHP values; demonstrate flexibility and emotional intelligence (desirable).
