Offer description

Join our team at The Guardian and be a part of a diverse and inclusive global organisation that delivers fearless, investigative journalism. We are looking for a Motion Graphics Designer to join our Social media team in editorial, creating bold, engaging animations for TikTok, Instagram and beyond.

You’ll design eye-catching motion graphics for social content, news videos, explainers and more – all while helping to develop templates, uphold our visual style and experiment with new storytelling formats.

If you’re creative, collaborative and passionate about visual storytelling, this is your chance to shape how Guardian journalism connects with audiences on the world’s biggest platforms.

This is a 12 month fixed term contract or staff secondment.

About the role

* Design high-quality motion graphics and animations for social platforms, news videos, documentaries and interactives.
* Collaborate with video producers, social editors, journalists, designers and developers to deliver bespoke, audience-focused visuals.
* Create and maintain graphics templates for use across the newsroom, ensuring consistency in style, brand and visual reporting.
* Use creativity and flair to uphold and evolve the Guardian’s design standards and visual identity.
* Stay curious, experiment with new approaches, and help us tell stories in fresh, engaging ways.

About you

* Demonstrable professional experience of creating high quality motion graphics and animation, translating ideas into engaging, dynamic, visual storytelling with strong use of typography, colour, composition and brand.
* Demonstrable interest in visualising data and explanatory design, and understanding of how to use animation/motion to simplify complex topics.
* Experience developing new video formats, styles and guidelines, such as explainers, news video and documentaries.
* Experience of working collaboratively with video producers, designers and editors.
* Comfortable in the practical aspects of video production; from concept, to design, to animation, post-production and understanding how to incorporate sound and music.
* Experience working in a newsroom is an advantage.
* Ideally, you’ll have a demonstrable ability to bring a diverse perspective to this role.

We actively encourage applications from candidates who are Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) or from other groups traditionally underrepresented in the UK media.

How to apply

To apply, upload your latest CV, portfolio (where possible) and a cover letter which outlines why you’d love to take on this role, and why you’re a great match for what we’re looking for.

The closing date for applications is Thursday 16th October 2025.

Please let us know if there are any changes we could make to help your application, this includes providing documents in accessible formats or personalising the process to better support your needs. Please contact Sean on sean.brinkley@theguardian.com to discuss further so we can work with you to support you through your application.

We do not use AI-assisted technology to review applications; every application is reviewed by a member of our recruitment team.
