Offer description

An exciting opportunity to join Cardiac ITU/HDU/PACU based at Morriston Hospital. This is an eighteen(18) bedded unit which provides specialist nursing care to patients following Cardiac, Thoracic and General surgery.

This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated NMC registered nurse with existing or promising strong clinical and leadership skills.

The ideal candidate will be compassionate and will be able to demonstrate excellent communication skills, committed to delivering high quality care and can work well as part of a team.


Main duties of the job

To be responsible for the individualised care of patients on their elective/inhouse surgical pathway.

To provide and maintain a high standard of nursing practice whilst co-ordinating and liaising with other members of the multidisciplinary team.

To assist with support and supervision of students and junior members of the team.

To supervise and co-ordinate other staff as appropriate and take charge of the unit.

To demonstrate leadership and deputise in the absence of the Senior Sister/Senior Charge Nurse.

Person Specification


Essential Qualifications & Knowledge

* Registered Nurse (Part 1) - Active NMC Registration
* Bachelor degree in relevant health related subject (or equivalent experience)
* Knowledge of Safeguarding Adults/Children including the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards
* Knowledge of quality and service improvement methodologies e.g. Bronze IQT. Able to demonstrate sound knowledge of NMC Code (2015)
* Recognised management qualification
* Understanding of wider nursing and health care related agenda
* Relevant clinical experience
* Experience of working in a multi-professional environment. Experience of shift leadership
* Experience of working with preregistration nursing / midwifery students
* Experience of formal /informal teaching and of mentoring preregistration nursing or midwifery students.
* Able to relate theory into practice through reflective skills
* Awareness of current issues in Nursing and Specialty
* Awareness of financial and resource Management
* Relevant experience within specialty and able to demonstrate sound knowledge of relevant specialty
* Experience of coordinating a team. Experience of facilitating learning in and from practice
* Previous experience of leadership and Management Awareness of current issues in nursing and Specialty Awareness of financial and resource management


Essential Aptitude and abilities

* Ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate care
* Ability to motivate a team and positively influence others
* Able to establish credibility and lead a nursing team to deliver / maintain high standards of care
* Able to support junior colleagues in the provision of direct care
* Ability to respond to/lead change, delegate and prioritise work
* Able to manage time effectively. Excellent interpersonal and IT skills Supervisory management skills
* Evidence of commitment to and understanding of Mentorship, reflection, clinical supervision
* Evidence of their own areas of clinical interest and contribution towards developing clinical practice.
* Demonstrate a willingness to develop leadership and management skills Able to demonstrate a flexible approach to meet the needs of the service
* Welsh Language Skills are desirable levels 1 to 5 in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing in Welsh


Other Essential Criteria

* Ability to travel within geographical area. Able to work hours flexibly
* Commitment to working a shift pattern which is complementary to rest of leadership team within clinical area, with aim of providing maximum visibility of nursing leadership team across 7 days of week. Details to be agreed with nursing management team on appointment
