Job Description
We are looking for a fixed‑term Energy Advisor to support the Environment Agency’s role in regulating the energy sector, including combustion plants, waste incineration, and refineries. The role is up to two years, offering flexible work arrangements and the opportunity to contribute to the UK’s Net Zero strategy by ensuring compliance with environmental regulations and safeguarding the environment.
Responsibilities
* Provide expert technical support and leadership through advice, guidance, and training to the Agency’s teams and external stakeholders.
* Develop regulatory strategy for energy sectors and deliver the tools needed to regulate, support development, and deliver environmental outcomes.
* Commission and manage external research projects as required.
* Work collaboratively with internal teams and external partners such as Defra, DESNZ, trade associations and industry players.
* Serve an incident response role, making yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident.
Team Context
The Energy & COMAH team is part of the Energy and Manufacturing Industries Regulation Directorate. Our experts define sector standards and provide guidance, training, and best practice tools to support regulatory work.
Experience & Skills Required
* Ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and actively encourage consideration of diversity issues.
* Relevant technical and regulatory knowledge, including experience regulating combustion, waste incineration, and refineries, and knowledge of emission control measures.
* Strong interpersonal skills – build and maintain good relationships with colleagues, operators, partner regulators, government, trade bodies, and academia.
* Team player – work cooperatively to achieve common goals.
