Locum Specialty Doctor in Sexual Health

Luton Sexual Health is seeking a locum Specialty Doctor to join the well-established Luton Sexual Health Service as an addition to the existing team of four Consultants and one Specialty doctor. The appointee will need to demonstrate experience of independent delivery of an integrated sexual health service, including working with people living with HIV, STI diagnosis and treatment and contraception provision. There will be opportunity for the appointee to develop a subspecialist interest and to support the further development of the Luton Sexual Health service.


Main duties of the job

Key tasks:

Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of all patients presenting to the Luton & Dunstable University Hospital NHS FT.

To share with colleagues in Luton Sexual Health the management of all patients presenting to the service.

Teaching and training of intermediate grade and junior medical staff, healthcare professionals working in primary care, nursing staff and medical students.

To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.

To have responsibility for and actively participate in continuing professional development (CPD).

Job responsibilities

The post holder will, in conjunction with the existing doctors, have responsibilities for providing advice, screening, diagnosis and treatment of patients with STIs including HIV infection and specialist contraception services including LARC. They will be committed to the continued development of integrated sexual health services in line with national policy, local commissioning arrangements and evidence-based best practice. The post holder will have the opportunity to help with innovations and service developments designed to achieve local/national targets, develop/expand outreach service, increase access and optimise cost efficiency of the service. The appointee will also be expected to work alongside the other doctors in providing clinical supervision for the multidisciplinary team. The appointee will have opportunity to take an active part in Undergraduate and Postgraduate teaching, including the training of specialty trainees and nursing staff.

The post holder will share responsibilities with their professional colleagues and will contribute to the governance arrangements of the department. The post holder will be required to cover for colleagues during periods of absence, and will have continuing responsibility for patient care and the proper functioning of the Department.

The post holder may be required to attend the regional audit and speciality group meetings and local network meetings virtually.

The post holder will be encouraged to develop a special interest in line with the Departmental policy to expand its range of specialist services.

The post holder will be expected to work with the local managers, general practitioners and other medical and professional clinical colleagues in the efficient running of the service.

Participation in audit and other governance activities will be encouraged. Where possible the post holder will be encouraged to develop a research interest compatible with the focus of the service and existing team.

The successful candidate will work according to the terms and conditions of the SAS doctor contract.

All staff employed by the Trust are expected to comply with the Trusts Health and Safety policies.


Person Specification


Qualifications

* MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
* DFSRH
* Letter of Competence in Sub-dermal Contraceptive Implant techniques
* Letter of Competence in Intrauterine techniques
* DipGUM
* MRCP
* MFSRH/DRCOG/ MRCOG
* FSRH Faculty Registered Trainer
* STIF Trainer
* Diploma in HIV Medicine
* up-to-date ALS.
* Full GMC Registration (GMC Licence to Practice is mandatory before employment commences)
* Evidence of achievement of Foundation competencies by time of appointment in line with GMC standards in Good Medical Practice including: - Good clinical care - Maintaining good medical practice - Good relationships and communication with patients - Good working relationships with colleagues - Good teaching and training - Professional behaviour and probity - Delivery of good acute clinical care
* Evidence of achievement of ST1/CT1 competences in a relevant specialty at time of application and likelihood of achieving ST2/CT2 competences in a relevant specialty by the start date of the post
* To be eligible to work at this grade the appointee will have completed at least four years' full-time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis) with a minimum of 2 years clinical experience in this specialty
* Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in Sexual Health
* Eligibility to work in the UK.


Health

* Meets professional health requirements (in line with GMC standards in Good Medical Practice)

Clinical Governance

* Able to demonstrate a broad understanding of the principles and elements of clinical governance.


Clinical Skills

* Excellent all round experience of DGH work
* Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in Sexual Health
* Able to take full and independent responsibility for clinical work and delivering service without direct supervision.
* Acute care safe: up-to-date ALS. Hospital at night team working / experience. Out of hours experience relevant to the job.
* Relevant specialty clinical knowledge: capacity to apply sound clinical knowledge relevant to the job, specialty knowledge exam.
* Clinical judgement: experience in making clinical decisions and managing risk. Knows when to seek help, able to prioritise clinical need.
* Practical skills: shows aptitude for practical skills, required for the job.
* Proven ability to work effectively in different clinical settings required in the job.
* Excellent all round experience of DGH work
* Able to take full and independent responsibility for clinical work and delivering service without direct supervision.


Fitness to Practise

* Applicant's knowledge is up to date and fit to practise safely


Language Skills

* All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English that are adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues, which could be demonstrated by one of the following: - Applicants have undertaken undergraduate medical training in English - Applicants have scores in the academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or equivalent equal to those required for recruitment to MMC specialty training programmes.
* If applicants believe that they have adequate communication skills but do not fit into one of the examples they need to provide evidence


Clinical Effectiveness

* Understanding of clinical governance and ability to demonstrate ongoing CPD
* Experience of guideline appraisal
* Participation in relevant local audits Ability to interpret and apply clinical research
* Participation in relevant national audits


Teaching

* Knowledge and ability to teach all grades of trainees and medical students
* Has attended Teaching the Teachers or similar course

Personal Circumstances

* Fit to undertake the role with satisfactory Occupational Health clearance
* Satisfactory DBS clearance
