Business Support Officer
Location: Barnsley
Client: Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council
Salary: £15.66/hour
Contract Type: Temporary (3 months)
Hours: Monday – Friday (9:00 - 17:00)
Role Overview: Barnsley’s Youth Justice Service (YJS) and BSAFE teams are seeking a dedicated and skilled Business Support Officer (BSO) to support critical frontline services. This role involves minute-taking for complex and often sensitive meetings, accurate data input into case recording systems, and responsive handling of varied administrative tasks. The ideal candidate will have prior experience in a Social Care setting and be comfortable working in an environment that deals with challenging and emotive subject matter, including exploitation, abuse, and serious youth violence.
Key Duties May Include
1. Handling telephone and face-to-face enquiries, offering advice and signposting in line with legislation and procedures
2. Managing correspondence and communication, both incoming and outgoing
3. Supporting statutory meetings, including accurate minute-taking on mobile devices
4. Organising and coordinating meetings, diaries, and appointments
5. Conducting research and completing project work to deadlines
6. Performing financial administration, including placing orders and processing payments
7. Maintaining various electronic and paper-based records
Key Responsibilities
8. Provide efficient, confidential administrative support across service areas
9. Liaise with internal/external stakeholders to maintain communication links
10. Ensure information systems are accurate, secure, and appropriately maintained
11. Contribute to the development of effective business support systems
12. Analyse data and compile reports for diverse audiences, including senior management
13. Assist in problem-solving and customer service delivery under pressure

14. Proven experience working in a business support environment
15. Experience handling sensitive/confidential information
16. Experience managing financial data and servicing meetings
17. Familiarity with public sector operations, especially local government

18. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
19. Strong problem-solving and analytical ability
20. High level of accuracy when inputting and handling data
21. Ability to manage conflicting workloads and meet strict deadlines
22. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and general ICT systems
23. Ability to maintain emotional resilience when dealing with sensitive topics
24. Effective team player with flexibility and adaptability
Other Requirements
25. Minimum Level 2 qualification in a relevant field
26. Commitment to continuous professional development
27. Understanding of data protection, health & safety, and governance
28. Willingness to travel as required and work flexibly according to service needs
29. Demonstrate alignment with the Council’s values and behaviours
