About the Pirbright institute

The Pirbright institute delivers world-leading research to understand, predict, detect and respond to viral disease outbreaks. We study viruses of livestock that are endemic and exotic to the UK, including zoonotic viruses, by using the most advanced tools and technologies to understand host-pathogen interactions in animals and arthropod vectors. Our major strength in understanding the immune systems of livestock provides a platform to control current diseases and respond to emerging threats. This important research would not be possible without the proportionate use of animals, which are integral to the development of new disease control measures such as vaccines and diagnostics. We have an establishment-wide commitment to the 3rs (replacement, reduction and refinement), high standards of animal welfare, a culture of care and openness.

Our institute is made up of a dynamic and vibrant community of staff covering a diverse set of chosen fields, backgrounds and experience. We all play a crucial role in furthering the institute’s aspirations, advancing the frontiers of science and knowledge through our excellent scientific research, knowledge sharing and contribution; with a real focus in improving the world in which we live. Our outlook is always balanced by our strong sense of purpose, values and behaviours and an unwavering commitment to a ‘one institute’ approach.

Organisation position and purpose

The aim of this post is to carry out studies and surveillance of Culicoides biting midges and to contribute to insect production and supply within our insectary facilities. As part of Defra-funded activities, we monitor Culicoides populations seasonally, working closely with policymakers, epidemiologists, and field veterinary personnel to predict and mitigate the impact of arboviruses entering the UK.

In collaboration with another postdoctoral researcher, this role will jointly manage the existing surveillance system and conduct research related to Culicoides and the viruses they transmit. The postholder will also work within an established team to provide unique insect lines for internal and external users in both the UK and internationally.

This role would suit an entomologist with broad interests and a proactive approach—someone who enjoys applied science, supports others in their research, and can multitask effectively. Full training will be provided in Culicoides identification, related research techniques, and in the production and maintenance of specific insect lines.

The role is based within the Vector Ecology Group and reports to the Group Lead.

Main duties and Responsibilities

Maintaining a Surveillance Scheme for Culicoides Biting Midges in the UK

* Select sites for sampling Culicoides populations across the UK
* Distribute sampling materials to volunteers involved in the scheme
* Identify Culicoides specimens collected through the scheme and in other studies
* Use molecular techniques to differentiate cryptic Culicoides species
* Liaise with the Group Leader to provide seasonal data and insights to stakeholders, including policymakers, epidemiologists, and members of the public

Conducting Independent Scientific Research on Culicoides and Other Vectors

* Develop, plan, and carry out studies assessing the risk of vector-borne viruses in the UK
* Write and contribute to scientific publications based on research outcomes
* Support and supervise undergraduate, MSc, and PhD students where required
* Collaborate with colleagues across the Vector Ecology Group to support wider research projects

Insect Colony Production and Maintenance

* Maintain colonies of biting flies to meet internal and external demand
* Provide cover for additional insect lines during staff absences
* Assist with the development and maintenance of new insect colony lines

Specific Requirements

Essential

* A PhD in Entomology, Ecology, or a related Biological Science
* Demonstrated enthusiasm and subject knowledge related to vectors of arboviruses
* Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain scientific concepts at varying levels of complexity depending on the audience, and to write clear, concise documentation
* Practical experience in molecular laboratory techniques, including nucleic acid extraction, PCR, and sequencing
* Experience in field-based research and data collection

Desirable

* Experience with classical taxonomic techniques for insect populations (e.g. morphometrics, slide mounting of specimens)
* Experience in the routine maintenance of insect colony lines and understanding of biocontainment principles
* Experience conducting surveillance related to arboviruses and/or vector populations
* Experience in designing and delivering independent research studies
* Evidence of publishing research in peer-reviewed scientific journals

What we offer

* Generous Group Personal Pension Scheme and life cover (subject to age and earnings)
* 25 days annual leave per annum, pro rata, plus 10.5 public and privilege days
* Buy and sell annual leave
* Option to carry over up to two weeks annual leave
* Pirbright gym with subsidised membership
* Pirbright social club
* Pirbright Lifestyle Hub (employee discount site)
* Cycle to work
* Subsidised staff restaurant
* Childcare allowance
* Free onsite parking
* Electric Car charging facilities
