NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is one of the largest healthcare systems in the United Kingdom, employing approximately 40,000 staff across a wide range of clinical and non-clinical professions and roles. The role:

The purpose of this role is to undertake the role of the Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) utilising specialist clinical knowledge to inform decision making and clinical judgment by independently managing the care of patients who wish to travel to other countries. High levels of specialist clinical assessment, decision making and clinical judgement to formulate appropriate vaccination and treatment plans are required. This post holder will provide specialist advice and support for clients to aid in their decision making when travelling to countries in which additional vaccination or specialist travel medicines are required or recommended. Provide specialist advice to healthcare professionals, other agencies, carers, clients and relatives. Support the development of the service to improve practice and work collaboratively across healthcare boundaries, implementing and evaluating evidence- based standards, guidelines and policies.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:

1. The location for this post is the Parkview Resource Centre
2. The shift pattern for this post is Monday to Friday, 08:30 - 16:30

Key responsibilities:

3. Responsible for providing specialist travel advice and undertaking full travel health consultations and risk assessment/monitoring
4. Responsible for NHS Travel vaccine administration and management in line with Patient Group Directive’s and Best Practice Guidelines or Prescribing as required for specialist role and in line with prescribing competence
5. Provide clinical leadership in relation to the management of the Travel Service working at specialist practice level to provide mentoring, supervision and clinical advice where required to the multidisciplinary team
6. Develop effective partnerships and positive working relationships with a variety of internal and external agencies to support seamless care provision across all agencies
7. Participate in the appraisal process and Personal Development Plan Review in line with the Knowledge and Skills Framework. Support management of performance issues for area of responsibility. Provide and participate in clinical and peer supervision
8. Participate in the development of local procedures and protocols ensuring compliance with National legislation and NHSGGC policies and identify opportunities for the continuous development of service
9. To support NHSGGC values of quality, teamwork, care and compassion, dignity and respect, and openness, honesty, and responsibility through the application of appropriate behaviours and attitudes
10. For area of expertise provide specialist advice and teaching to the multidisciplinary team. May work in collaboration with education providers and other key stakeholders to ensure staff competency is achieved and maintained

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

11. First level Registered Nurse with current NMC Registration and Revalidation
12. Evidence of significant post registration professional practice travel experience to undertake and fulfil the key areas for this post
13. Evidence of TREC course completion or equivalent (Desired but not essential)

14. Evidence of delegation and support to skill mix teams
15. Effective listening and interpersonal skills
16. Time management skills/ability to prioritise workload
17. Competent in standard IT packages e.g. Microsoft Word & Excel
18. Prescribing experience relevant to specialist role e.g. nurse prescribing (v100/v150) or independent supplementary prescribing (v300) (Desired but not essential)

19. Diploma in Travel Medicine or equivalent (Desired but not essential)
