The role
As a Senior Radioactive Waste Engineer, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary where your expertise will directly contribute to national security and environmental protection, while accelerating your career in a dynamic and highly regulated industry.
Day-to-day, you’ll be part of a specialist team focused on site‑wide waste governance, technical support and project integration. You’ll oversee waste engineers, provide expert advice, and deliver solutions that ensure compliance with environmental legislation and nuclear safety standards.
1. Supporting management and mentoring waste engineers within the team.
2. Providing customer and project‑facing technical support and advice.
3. Producing governance documents and technical reports to underpin waste strategies.
4. Ensuring compliance with UK nuclear industry legislation and best practice.
5. Driving continuous improvement in waste characterisation, processing, and transport.
This role is full time, 35 hours per week and provides hybrid working arrangements with 1 days in the office/onsite and 4 days working from home.
Essential experience of the Senior Radioactive Waste Engineer
6. Applied understanding of radioactive waste management, including characterisation, processing, sentencing, packaging and transport.
7. Extensive knowledge of environmental legislation in the UK nuclear industry.
8. Ability to determine and apply Best Available Techniques (BAT) with robust justification.
9. High levels of numeracy and IT proficiency, including data interpretation and spreadsheet development.
10. Excellent technical writing and communication skills for diverse audiences.
Qualifications for the Senior Radioactive Waste Engineer
11. Degree in a relevant subject.
12. Extensive radioactive waste management qualifications and/or experience
Security Clearance
The successful candidate must be a sole UK national who is able to achieve and maintain Naval Nuclear Propulsion Information (NNPPI) security clearance for this role.
