Payroll Administrator

Salary: £26,403-£28,142 per annum (pro‑rata if applicable)
Hours: Full‑time, 37 hours per week
Contract: Permanent
Location: Hybrid with a requirement to attend the office one day per week
The Role
We are seeking a Payroll Administrator to join our payroll team and help deliver an accurate, efficient and customer‑focused payroll service to employees across the Council and our Traded Services customers.
Key Responsibilities
* Assist with the administration and processing of the Council’s payroll, including starters, leavers, contractual changes, and variations to pay
* Input, validate and maintain payroll data accurately within the payroll system
* Calculate pay adjustments, overtime, enhancements, statutory payments, and deductions
* Ensure compliance with HMRC requirements, pension regulations (including Teachers Pensions, Local Government Pensions, NHS Pensions), and employment legislation
* Respond to payroll‑related queries from employees, managers and external bodies in a timely and professional manner
* Work collaboratively with HR, Finance and other internal teams to resolve payroll issues
* Maintain accurate records and support audit requests as required
About You
You will be an organised and reliable individual with a strong attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy.
Essential criteria
* Experience of working in a payroll or payroll‑related administrative role
* Knowledge of payroll processes, pay calculations and statutory deductions
* Good numeracy skills and high attention to detail
* Ability to manage confidential information appropriately
* Strong IT skills, including Microsoft Excel and payroll systems
* Ability to work to deadlines in a fast‑paced environment
Desirable criteria
* Experience of payroll within a local government or public sector environment
* Knowledge of Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) and Teachers Pensions Scheme (TP)
* Experience using integrated HR/Payroll systems (e.g. iTrent)
* A payroll qualification (e.g. CIPP) or willingness to work towards one
