This new appointment as an ortho-geriatrician speciality registrar is part of a plan to improve outcomes for all older trauma patients, where orthopaedic trauma is consolidated for HHFT on the Basingstoke site. The successful candidates will work in partnership with a forward-thinking, enthusiastic Orthopaedic department to deliver comprehensive care to our older orthopaedic trauma patients throughout their hospital pathway.
The role will include pre-op and frailty assessment, liaison with anaesthetic staff, ReSPECT discussions, post-op care, and rehab as part of an Orthogeriatric team within the Orthopaedic service. Currently, there is no commitment to the general medical, care of the elderly, or on-call medical rota; if interested, this can be explored further. The appointee will join our Orthogeriatric team, supported by a consultant nurse, nurse practitioner, and other orthopaedic resident doctors. The department benefits from the clinical support of an experienced geriatric consultant, Dr Oswell.
This is an excellent opportunity to develop clinical experience and a portfolio in Orthogeriatrics or medicine for older people, suitable for candidates working towards a specialist training application or wishing to complete the portfolio pathway. This post may suit someone with experience in older person's medicine or seeking a longer-term position where they can contribute to the development of the post.
The successful applicants will be expected to:
1. Deliver quality Orthogeriatric and medical services effectively, regularly benchmarking to improve practice under the supervision of a Consultant Orthogeriatrician.
2. Enhance and develop the Orthogeriatric service.
3. Strengthen links with GPs and neighbouring Trusts.
4. Meet NHFD targets for best practice care in Fractured Neck of Femur patients.
5. Initiate and participate in regular clinical audits.
6. Take an active role in research.
7. Support the organisational aims of Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, contributing positively to management and financial strategies.
