DEPARTMENT: BBC Nations, North East and Cumbria Digital Video and Social journalist (BBC Local)
LOCATION: Newcastle/Middlesbrough office – hybrid working
PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: £27,600 - £33,500 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

Purpose of the Role
We are looking for a journalist to create social media and digital video content for the BBC in the North East and Cumbria. Our social media platforms are vital in helping us to reach and interact with people who don’t get their local news from broadcast media. This role involves creating engaging content for Facebook, Instagram, X and Tiktok – link posts, graphics, carousel posts, stories, explainers, reels – as well as digital video for the BBC website.

We are looking for someone with a flair for digital storytelling who is able to come up with a constant supply of original stories, self-shoot and edit them for the news website and for our social media platforms. The content you produce will go on our online and social platforms, with the scope to be picked up by TV and radio and BBC News’s social platforms too.

Your Key Responsibilities And Impact
* Using social listening tools to find the issues that matter most to local audiences
* Film and edit engaging video content for our digital and social platforms
* You’ll be confident at pitching new ideas and creative treatments on the day’s news stories and be able to come up with a constant stream of original stories
* Scripts, produces, and edits digital video – guiding correspondents and reporters to deliver in a way that works for social media audiences
Essential Criteria
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
* Demonstrates confidence in digital storytelling, with the ability to film and edit content that works well across different digital platforms and to develop creative ways of telling stories
* Uses social listening daily to source stories and has a thorough understanding of the social media market at a local level
* Understands social media consumption habits and what works well on different platforms
* Applies audience analytics to shape content and assess its impact
* Is proficient in Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere, or other video editing software
* Works well as part of a team, helping to produce content of a consistently high standard
* Experience of working in a daily news environment with the ability to work to tight deadlines to turn around content
* A good understanding of media law and the BBC’s editorial guidelines
