Here at G&H Torquay, we manufacture a line of active and passive fibre optic components and modules that offer the performance and reliability required for some of the most demanding and challenging applications in the world. Due to internal promotion, we’re recruiting for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join this dynamic team. The ideal candidate will play a key role in the development of mechanical designs for fibre optics components and systems. From conceptualization to implementation, the Mechanical Design Engineer will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to ensure the successful realization of innovative fibre optics products.
We’re looking for someone who is well-organized, adaptable, and driven. Reporting to the NPI Product Line Director, you will need to communicate effectively across all functions of both the Torquay site and the wider G&H Global Business.
Responsibilities:
1. Develop mechanical design of new products
2. Design and develop jigs and fixtures using SolidWorks
3. Communicate design needs and findings to team members, clients, or manufacturing partners to convey the design comprehensively
4. Coordinate with contractors and supply chain to ensure designs meet quality standards, are within budget, and meet deadlines
5. Translate engineering ideas into mechanical solutions and implement best practices
6. Create part numbers
7. Generate manufacturing drawings (e.g., BS standards)
8. Deliver projects within budget constraints
9. Progress ECO through the mechanical design stage
Ideal candidates will have the following attributes:
1. A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in mechanical engineering and proven experience in mechanical design
2. Proficiency in SolidWorks software, with a strong understanding of mechanical design principles and best practices
3. Solid understanding of materials science and manufacturing processes such as injection moulding, CNC machining, and 3D printing
4. Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to analyze complex technical challenges
5. Strong communication skills for effective collaboration with multidisciplinary teams
6. Attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality designs that meet performance and reliability standards
7. Experience with finite element analysis (FEA) and other simulation tools is a plus
8. Self-motivated with a passion for innovation and continuous learning
9. Experience in mechanical design using 3D CAD SolidWorks
The following would be advantageous but not essential:
* A background within the fibre optics industry or a related field
* Familiarity with industry standards and regulations related to fibre optics and telecommunications products
