THE ROLE
From Conceptual Studies to Turnkey Projects. This role is pivotal in securing new business by developing competitive, compliant, and customer-focused bids. It requires cross-functional coordination, strategic input, and technical leadership throughout the bid lifecycle.
The Bid Project Engineer will work closely with the Sales team to ensure efficient execution of the company’s rigorous bidding process.
The role involves coordinating technical interactions across all functional areas of the business—including Technical, Engineering, Commercial Project Management, and Supply Chain Management departments. The BPE will also play a key role in building relationships with external stakeholders such as customers, subcontractors, suppliers, consortium partners, and other Primetals business units.
Flexibility is essential, as the role requires adapting to shifting priorities, scopes, and timescales, while managing multiple proposals simultaneously.
Regular international travel, often at short notice, is required.
MAIN TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Review and interpret the Customer tender documentation to establish a clear technical brief for the proposal.
2. Define the bid strategy with the Sales team, outlining scope, key resources, timelines, and action plans; update as needed throughout the proposal period.
3. Lead the proposal kick-off meeting and coordinate pre-project engineering activities in line with the agreed strategy.
4. Manage and co-ordinate technical queries among stakeholders, ensuring activities align with company procedures and involve the appropriate technical experts. Ensure documentation is stored in approved locations.
5. Prepare technical proposal documentation, incorporating inputs from technical and engineering teams. Use the centralised database to generate the scope list.
6. Ensure compliance with customer tender requirements; where deviations are necessary, compile and agree on a list with the customer.
7. Define quality assurance requirements and applicable engineering standards.
8. Lead the estimation of effort required across departments (engineering, project management, supply chain, site activities) and prepare a consolidated summary of hours required to execute the project.
9. Coordinate the development of equipment lists, motor lists, bills of quantities, and spares lists to support cost estimation. Create vendor lists as needed.
10. Regularly review the merchant account estimate with SCM, Estimating, and Sales teams.
11. Coordinate the development of the project schedule with all stakeholders.
12. Allocate resources effectively, ensuring appropriately skilled personnel are assigned to support the bid strategy.
13. Develop a Technical Risk Register in collaboration with the Technology Group, Engineering, and Sales.
14. Review legislative requirements (., COMAH, SIL) with the Technical Group and ensure necessary documentation is prepared.
15. Organise regular reviews of the proposal, including design reviews, benchmarking, and internal approval meetings.
16. Prepare technical alignment documents with consortium partners, where applicable.
17. Participate in technical and commercial meetings with customers. Prepare minutes of meeting and co-ordinate efforts on the actions needed.
18. Ensure a thorough and seamless handover to the project execution team, clearly defining scope, deliverables, deviations, and unresolved technical issues.
19. Actively contribute to the use and continuous improvement of proposal tools and processes, including design reviews and lessons learned workshops.
REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
Knowledge & Skills:
20. Strong leadership skills, including team development, motivation, and relationship-building.
21. Solid understanding of Blast Furnace Plant or similarly complex industrial technologies.
22. Effective intercultural communication.
23. Knowledge of project economics, including cost monitoring, financial controls, and economic indicators (., scorecards).
24. Familiarity with project management tools and methodologies.
25. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Project), SAP, and AutoCAD.
26. Highly organised and diligent in managing responsibilities.
27. Fluent in English; additional languages are an asset.
28. Degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Metallurgical, or related discipline).
Experience:
29. 5–10 years of engineering experience, preferably in the metallurgical industry.
30. Experience working with Sales teams on technical and commercial bid preparation.
31. Proven ability to lead project teams through the full project lifecycle.
32. Experience engaging with global customers and stakeholders on technical matters.
33. Working knowledge of engineering interfaces with internal departments such as SCM and QA/QC, following company execution procedures.
