LOCUM Band 8 Biomedical Scientist – Biochemistry Location: Durham Band: 8a Hours: Full-time (37.5 hours per week) Rate: £30 – £40 per hour (dependent on experience) Contract Type: Locum (initial 3–6 months with potential extension) An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 8 Biomedical Scientist with specialist expertise in Clinical Biochemistry to join a busy and well-equipped NHS laboratory in Durham on a locum basis. About the Role: The successful candidate will support the delivery of a high-quality clinical biochemistry service and provide leadership in technical and quality matters. This role is ideal for an experienced BMS looking for a senior position with the flexibility of a locum contract. Key Responsibilities: Lead and manage daily operations in the biochemistry department Maintain compliance with UKAS ISO 15189 standards and contribute to audits and quality assurance Supervise and support junior staff, ensuring training and competency assessments are up to date Assist with analyser maintenance, troubleshooting, and method validation Work closely with multidisciplinary teams to ensure timely and accurate results are delivered for patient care Essential Requirements: HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist Extensive post-registration experience in Clinical Biochemistry Proven ability to work independently and lead a team Strong understanding of laboratory quality systems and governance Experience using modern automated platforms (e.g., Roche, Abbott, Beckman) Desirable Skills: MSc or equivalent in Biomedical Science or a relevant subject Experience in LIMS and middleware systems Previous locum or Band 8-level experience Benefits: Competitive hourly rate: £30 – £40 per hour (DOE) Weekly payroll Flexible working arrangements Opportunity to work in a modern, high-throughput lab with experienced teams
