Overview
This role is an exciting opportunity for an experienced electrical engineer with knowledge of high, medium, low and extra‑low voltage electrical systems and equipment to join the Environment Agency’s Standards and Engineering team as a Senior Electrical Engineer. Expertise relating to control systems design and SCADA / telemetry systems would be beneficial. Working within our Standards, Asset Management and Engineering Directorate you will influence and shape how we deliver our service into the future, providing technical engineering leadership and support to the whole organisation to meet our objectives of safe, reliable and sustainable assets and net zero carbon commitments.
You will be part of a team that manages, develops and maintains our electrical engineering standards, including our electrical safety rules, for our electrical systems and equipment (HV and LV power systems and control systems within assets such as pumping stations, water management, flood defence structures and monitoring sites). You will help develop, deliver and maintain competency and skills guidance for all employees managing or carrying out work on our electrical systems and equipment and will hold a national incident response role (within normal or out of hours). The team is dispersed but has a strong identity, regularly linking together to collaborate within the team and across the business.
Experience & Skills Required
* A good working knowledge of the Electricity at Work regulations and BS 7671 IET wiring regulations.
* A good working knowledge of control systems, including the application of IEC 61508, IEC 62061 and BS EN 13489, and telemetry / SCADA systems.
* Knowledge of high and low voltage generation and distribution systems.
* Knowledge and experience in the development and delivery of Safe systems of work, risk assessments, method statements.
* Testing and isolation of high and low voltage electrical systems and proving dead.
* Strong understanding of a risk‑based approach to electrical maintenance philosophies and implementation, including the application of Failure Mode Effects Analysis, reliability systems and processes.
* Drafting and publishing of electrical policy, instructions and guidance.
* Excellent work management, team working and communication skills – must be present for this role.
Additional Information
This is a hybrid role; we will allocate a base location near to your home. Some travel and overnight stays may be required. You’ll have an incident management objective in your development plan and training will be provided. Candidates will be interviewed via MS Teams within three weeks of the closing date. If you consent to being held on a reserve list, your details will be held for six months and we may offer you an alternative post.

Role Specific Requirements
* UK driving licence.
* Current membership of a recognised engineering institution and be registered as a Chartered Engineer with the UK Engineering Council, or evidence of working towards registration within 12 months.
