Community Phlebotomist

We are looking for a caring and motivated Community Phlebotomist to join our team at the Luton Treatment Centre. In this rewarding role, you will provide essential nursing care support to the Nursing Team, working primarily within a clinic setting while also carrying out home visits when required. You will deliver phlebotomy clinics at the Luton Treatment Centre and support Community Phlebotomists with domiciliary visits as needed.
This is a varied position offering the opportunity to work across different services. During periods of staffing pressure, you may be asked to provide support in other areas, working within your skills and competencies to help maintain high standards of patient care.
Key responsibilities include:
* Supporting the Nursing Team in delivering high-quality patient care.
* Running phlebotomy clinics at the Luton Treatment Centre.
* Assisting with domiciliary visits alongside Community Phlebotomists.
* Providing flexible support to other services when required.
* Delivering compassionate and professional care in both clinic and community settings.
Shifts will be either 8:00 am – 4:00 pm or 11:00 am – 7:00 pm, depending on service and clinical needs. If you are passionate about patient care and enjoy working as part of a supportive team, we would love to hear from you.

Main duties of the job
* Provide basic nursing care support to the DVT Nursing team based at LTC.
* Support taking out of hours bloods to the laboratory in the evenings.
* Community Phlebotomist Service with domiciliary visits where necessary.
* Provide phlebotomy clinics at the Luton Treatment Centre including evenings.
* When undertaking home visits on scheduled days, plan visits accordingly.
* Assess the client's registration forms and initiate investigations (including blood pressure, weight, height, bloods).
* Provide basic dressings as directed by nursing team.
* Set up clinical areas prior to clinic.
* Chaperone and assist clients attending for procedures (on and off examination couch, escorting within the building and out to their car).
* Act as an ambassador for the Luton Treatment Centre.
* Give general advice to patients regarding services.
* Check all equipment prior to clinic and report any defects to appropriate personnel.
* Take appropriate emergency action as required and immediately inform the nurse in charge or manager.
* Assist in the collection of information for audit purposes.
* Rotate stock according to expiry dates.
* Put supplies, pharmacy, logistics and stores away.
* Ensure bins are emptied at the end of each clinic.
* Assist in taking requests from patients on the phone booking line for clinic phlebotomy.

Communication
* Greet patients attending clinics at LTC and signpost them accordingly.
* Record accurate, concise information on patient care within the patient notes.
* Always maintain confidentiality of patients.
* Communicate patient information to medical/nursing staff as appropriate to patient care.
* Attend and contribute to service meetings.
* Ensure accurate labelling of blood bottles and safe secure transfer to the laboratory.
* Assist in making appointments for patients who have language, speech or hearing difficulties.
* Receive, screen and transfer telephone calls as appropriate, acting on own initiative ensuring that accurate detailed messages are taken and recorded.
* Keep up to date with reading and replying to work email communications.
* Communicate with Phlebotomists, HCAs Specialist Nurses, GPs, Nurses, Patients, local hospitals, and other health professionals within the multidisciplinary team.
* Act as the patient’s advocate within the clinical setting.
* Be supportive and communicative with colleagues and clients.
Budgetary Responsibility
Monitor stock in partnership with nursing team and co‑ordinate ordering of supplies, logistics and equipment as required.
People Management
* Participate in the induction of students and Health Care Staff.
* Develop staff.
* Maintain own professional development and take part in appraisal and one‑to‑one process.
Research & Development Activity
* Undertake research and development activity e.g. hand washing and essential steps on a regular basis.
* Participate in obtaining patient engagement feedback on a continual basis and audits as and when required.
Clinical and Practice Governance
* Observe and maintain strict confidentiality with regard to any patient/family/staff/records and information in line with the requirements of the Data Protection Act.
* Ensure any data that is taken/shared as part of a phone call, transported, or transferred electronically is undertaken with regards to the Trust Information Governance and Information Security policies.
* Adhere to the Trust risk assessment and risk management processes.
* Adhere to infection control policies and procedures.
* Undertake mandatory training and any other training relevant to the role as required by East of England Community Health and Care NHS Trust.
* Participate in clinical and other audits as required.
* Provide patients and their families/carers with information on standards they should expect from the team.
* Participate in clinical supervision on a regular basis.
* Be ready and participate in relevant emergency process for the team.

Qualifications and Training
* N.A.P venepuncture qualification or equivalent or a willingness to undertake training within an agreed timeframe.
* Evidence of Achievement of Care Certificate or willingness to complete this within first 6 months of employment or Achievement of a vocationally related qualification (e.g. NVQ in Health and Social Care / clinical healthcare).
* Willingness to undertake Trust mandatory, statutory and essential training and further training related to the role to meet the needs of the service.
* Admin/clerical training.
Experience
* Communicate effectively in English.
* Experience working as an HCA or equivalent.
* Experience of working with the public.
* Previous experience of working in a team.
* Infection Control and universal precaution training or willingness to undertake training.
* Community experience in the phlebotomy / health care setting.
* Knowledge of computer (e.g. Microsoft).
* Experience of training staff on a 1-1 basis.
