Newly Qualified Paediatric Nurse

Child Health at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is pleased to offer the opportunity to join as a Newly Qualified Nurse for Child Health. As an integrated service we pride ourselves in delivering health care at the point of need and are one of the few such organised services within the UK.

We have roles in various clinical areas throughout the Unit, such as the acute units, assessment units and the neonatal units. We are keen to meet you if you are interested in starting your career with us in any of these areas across both Basingstoke and Winchester sites.

At HHFT, we offer a full and comprehensive orientation package and professional support suited to your individual needs, alongside ongoing support from the Clinical Education Team, in order for you to achieve your full potential. We register all NQN's onto the Wessex Child or Neonatal preceptorship programme, with support from the HHFT Child Health education team.


Main duties of the job

To support the team in the delivery of the service, this includes:

* High standards of Professional Practice to ensure quality and safety of patient care, experience and the patient journey.
* Developing own clinical practice, knowledge, skills and experience.
* Acting as a good role model.
* Supporting the team in ensuring that clinical services are delivered to a high quality of care and that all compliance requirements such as CQC and contractual requirements are achieved.
* To undertake the comprehensive assessment of patients using investigative and analytical skills where factors may be conflicting, requiring analysis and interpretation skills and the comparison of a range of options to achieve effective treatment or discharge planning.
* To develop clinically reasoned treatment, action, and discharge plans and to undertake and evaluate treatment.


Job responsibilities

Professional Practice

* To adhere to the NMC Code (2018), alongside Trust Policies and procedures.
* Implement and embrace the vision and values at HHFT.
* To be responsible for contributing to the creation and maintenance of a clinical environment in which care and compassion is consistently demonstrated, ensuring patient‑centred care, privacy and dignity is practiced at all times.
* To adhere to the trust and local Child Protection and Safeguarding Policy at all times.
* To support the team to ensure a high quality seven‑day, twenty‑four‑hour service for all aspects of their work and the staff in their area/department.
* Maintain, develop and record your own continuing professional development, including booking and attending all statutory, mandatory and Trust or speciality specific training.
* Be professionally and legally responsible and accountable as a practitioner for all aspects of your professional activities.
* Deputise for the team leaders to achieve effective daily ward/department management including responding to urgent requests, prioritising clinical work, and balancing other patient‑related and professional activities in accordance with trust standards.
* Highly developed physical skills for accuracy e.g. of assessment, treatment administration, manipulation of equipment.

Communication

* Competence to assess capacity, gain valid informed consent and work within a legal framework with patients who lack capacity to consent to treatment.
* Communicate complex and sensitive information in an understandable form to seriously ill patients, carers and other staff, including imparting unwelcome news and ensuring understanding of their condition, e.g. patients who are dysphasic, deaf, blind or have difficulty accepting the diagnosis, and act as a patient’s advocate.
* Use effective communication skills of negotiation, persuasion and empathy to enable timely and effective communication within your own team, the wider MDT, and other agencies.
* Support staff who may be in distress or requiring support and address performance affecting issues; reinforce respect for individual customs, values and spiritual beliefs of patients and staff.
* Empower and motivate others to constantly strive to improve care and experience for patients and staff.

Planning and Organisation

* Deputise for the team leader in managing day‑to‑day operational requirements of the clinical area, making decisions as required, keeping line manager informed and escalating issues in a timely fashion.
* Delegate tasks effectively to optimise skill mix, flexibility and responsiveness of the team whilst retaining professional responsibility for appropriate delegation.
* Address any issues of professional behaviour, attitudes, quality or safety immediately.
* Record and report adverse and potentially adverse events and assist with investigation, ensuring learning is shared with the wider team.
* Ensure all care delivered empowers patients to recover independence at the earliest opportunity.
* Support team leaders in safe and effective clinical services, assist with roster management and support other clinical areas as required to meet trust’s ongoing requirements.
* Ensure staff under your delegated responsibility attend statutory, mandatory and clinical skills/lead training.
* Assist in organising and planning complex case conferences, ensuring correct staff and agencies are included.

Teaching, Training and Research Responsibilities

* Maintain clinical knowledge across a range of work practices.
* Keep up to date with evidence base, national developments and utilise best practice to support clinical services development.
* Support team in maintaining broad clinical skill set ensuring high quality, compassionate care.
* Assist in developing clinical competency for the area: conduct drug and clinical assessments for staff.
* Support delivery of trust‑wide clinical skills training with clinical specialists and the Education team.
* Manage assistants through delegation and monitor standards via competency framework.
* Assist in induction and orientation of new staff, including staffing on probationary contracts.
* Support achievement of clinical standards and regularly audit, implement actions to improve quality and safety.
* Understand methodology of critically reviewing evidence and conduct surveys/audits.


Person Specification


Training and qualifications

* Registered Nurse, with Experience
* Computer Literate
* Aware of HHFT Trust Core Values
* Experience of staff and student supervision


Experience and Knowledge

* Experience of working within Child Health
* HCSW experience within Child Health, Neonatal Unit


Skills and ability

* Ability to demonstrate required behaviour in keeping with Trust values.
* Customer care experience and dealing with complaints
