Overview

The BEST4 screening study is a collaboration between Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Trust, University of Cambridge and the Cancer Research UK (CRUK) Queen Mary University of London Cancer Prevention Trials Unit (CPTU) to deliver a clinical trial into the early detection of oesophageal cancer, the BEST4 Screening Study. This project is funded by CRUK and the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR). The trial aims to determine whether the Capsule Sponge test can be used to enable early diagnosis of cancer of the oesophagus and reduce cancer deaths. The BEST4 study will recruit 120,000 participants across approximately 5 regions in the UK. Clinical Research Practitioners are recruited to work across different locations within a designated region, carrying out clinical trial activities to support delivery and recruitment of the BEST4 study. You will manage clinics on the BEST4 mobile unit and be trained to administer the Capsule Sponge test. You will work with established clinical teams, researchers, research nurses, research practitioners and administrators to facilitate recruitment, sample collection, data entry and provide clinical support as required. Travel to various sites and clinics on a mobile unit is required.

You will liaise with the National Clinical Coordinator regarding appointments and cover on the unit and work closely with the National Clinical Coordinator, Clinical Research Team and Project managers at QMUL, Cambridge and EMS to ensure study objectives are met. You will be responsible for ensuring clinical and regulatory compliance, and that each participant journey and their experience is of the highest standard.


Main Duties

* Manage the clinic on the BEST4 mobile unit.
* Promote and nurture a welcoming, professional and pleasant environment for all participants.
* Explain study involvement and obtain informed consent, providing and receiving complex information as required.
* Complete the BEST4 participant screening visit as per study protocol.
* Confirm that participants are safe and eligible to take part in the study.
* Complete the informed consent process with the participant prior to the Capsule Sponge test.
* Perform the Capsule Sponge test on participants.
* Work autonomously to manage a caseload of participants while contributing to the wider BEST4 research team.
* Perform other clinical skills as required to support participants during study visits (e.g., emergency practices).
* Work in accordance with local policies and procedures and respond appropriately in emergencies (detachment, bleeding, resuscitation or anaphylactic reaction).
* Ensure mandatory training is up to date per local policies and requirements.
* Collaborate with the BEST4 clinical coordinator to address re-training needs in Capsule Sponge test administration.
* Input and enter data onto the electronic Case Report Form (eCRF) and related research databases as required.
* Collect, verify and enter study data with high accuracy in line with ICH Good Clinical Practice (ICH GCP).
* Work in accordance with regulations described in ICH-GCP, National Directives and Research Governance of Cambridge University, the Trusts, CPTU and EMS Healthcare policies and procedures.
* Identify potential barriers to recruitment and participate in implementing action plans as required.
* Facilitate and maintain effective communication with the study team, BEST4 Research Practitioners and study participants; attend and contribute to relevant meetings.
* Liaise with study personnel at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Trust, University of Cambridge, CPTU and EMS Healthcare as necessary.
* Drive the BEST4 mobile units to different research sites as per the study schedule.


Qualifications


Essential Criteria

* Relevant healthcare qualification (e.g., Paramedic, Midwife, Radiographer, Dietitian or equivalent)
* Continued continuing professional development (CPD)


Experience

* Clinical experience working with patients
* Significant clinical experience working with patients
* Experience working as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team
* Good understanding of clinical research


Skills

* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written)
* Ability to work accurately and methodically with attention to detail
* Team player who can also work independently and on own initiative
* High level of organisational and time management skills
* Excellent IT skills, proficient in MS Office


Other

* Full, clean UK manual driving licence. Travel to various sites and drive the clinical mobile unit (requires only a standard car licence).
* Willing to travel and undertake overnight stays as required


Desirable Criteria

* Degree in a related subject area
* Registered Nurse (NMC)
* ICH GCP Training
* Basic Life Support (BLS) or Immediate Life Support training
* Prior research experience
* Upper GI or endoscopy experience
* Experience in Cancer Research
* Experience in nurse-led/practitioner-led clinics
* Prior experience working with Capsule Sponge device
