About the Agency:
DJJ is committed to excellence in public safety by providing effective interventions that improve the lives of youth, strengthening both families and communities within the Commonwealth.

In this role the Carpentry Instructor will provide quality educational programs through sound instruction to meet the individual needs of residents/students, as well as the standards defined under the Commonwealth’s statutes and program certification requirements. This role is a Post-Secondary Instructor and will be evaluated by the Post-Secondary Program Administrator, to include leave requests. The incumbent will collaborate and follow onsite directives from the Education Leadership Team to include but not limited to the Managers, Division of Education Programmatic Directors, and School Superintendent.

Minimum Qualifications

Must hold or be eligible for Journeyman or Master Carpenter License and a Virginia Teaching License. Must have a minimum of two years of successful experience at the journeyman level or an equivalent in the trade. Must possess a high school diploma or Virginia Board of Education-approved high school equivalency credential. Knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials, and equipment to successfully perform the work. Ability to supervise students and youth, facilitate appropriate classroom management, and maintain accurate records.


Additional Considerations

Experience teaching or working with at-risk youth preferred. Knowledge of DJJ and DHRM policies and procedures and the ability to meet DHRM established physical demands.

Background & Pre-employment Screenings:

Pre-employment medical screenings are required for some DJJ positions.

Driver License: A valid driver’s license is required of DJJ employees to operate a state-owned or leased vehicle.
