Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced chemotherapy nurse to join the chemotherapy suite within the Primrose Unit.

The post holder will be responsible for administering and delivering care to patients receiving systemic anti‑cancer treatments, while upholding the highest standards of specialist cancer and palliative care within the Macmillan Primrose Unit at Bedford Hospital NHS Trust.

The role also includes supervising and supporting junior staff, students, and healthcare assistants, working collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary cancer care team.

Main duties of the job

You will need excellent communication and organisational skills, along with full training and competence in administering chemotherapy and related treatments.

You will provide specialist nursing care as part of a multidisciplinary team, demonstrating a high standard of clinical practice when assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating patient care.

You will act as a professional role model, offering supportive, effective clinical leadership to colleagues.

1. Ensure all care is delivered in accordance with Trust and unit/ward policies.

2. Participate in induction and preceptorship programmes as required, following appropriate training.

3. Maintain safe custody, administration and documentation of medicines in line with Trust policy, cytotoxic medication guidelines, and NMC standards.

4. Follow unit protocols for managing cytotoxic drug extravasation and anaphylaxis when required.

5. Inform the Unit/Ward Manager of any issues that may impact the professional standard of patient care.

6. Adhere to the NMC Code of Professional Conduct at all times

Qualifications

Essential criteria

7. Registerd Nurse (NMC)
8. Chemotherapy qualification
9. Cannulation & venepuncture course
10. Evidence of continuous professional development
11. UKONS SACT Passport

Desirable criteria

12. Mentorship Support for Professional Practice or equivalent

Expereince

Essential criteria

13. Substantial clinical experience within Acute hospital setting
14. Experience of good practical/clinical skills
15. Experience of working in an Oncology setting
16. Experience in undertaking audit
17. Experience in adminstering chemotherapy

Desirable criteria

18. Experience of clinical leadership

Knowledge

Essential criteria

19. Knowledge of professional issues and policy relating to specialist area
20. Able to act as a mentor and preceptor
21. Be aware of and act in accordance with the NMC code of professional conduct
22. Demonstrate knowledge of clinical governance

Skills

Essential criteria

23. Skilled in cannulation & venepuncture
24. Excellent communication skills- written & verbal
25. IT skills- basic level

30. Able to work under pressure and adapt to change
31. Skilled in Picc/Port management
