We are seeking a Director of Educational Improvement to join our senior leadership team within the Medical Directorate. This is a pivotal national role providing strategic leadership for educational improvement, governance, and quality management across the Postgraduate Medical Deanery, and contributing to unified, high‑quality governance across the wider Directorate.
This is a unique opportunity to influence the quality of postgraduate medical education and training at a national level, strengthening systems, infrastructure and assurance to support high‑quality training across NHS Wales.
Main duties of the job
As Director of Educational Improvement, you will play a central leadership role in shaping HEIW’s approach to medical education quality, governance, and improvement. Working closely with the Postgraduate Medical Dean, senior colleagues, and partners across NHS Wales, you will:
Provide strategic leadership for quality activity across the Medical Deanery, setting the vision for governance and educational improvement
Lead the implementation and ongoing development of the HEIW Quality Management System for postgraduate medical education and training
Oversee programmes of quality, governance and educational improvement, ensuring alignment with GMC standards and national policy
Provide strategic and professional leadership across the wider Medical Directorate, embedding high‑quality governance and improvement standards across all functions
Lead the development and continuous improvement of postgraduate medical education infrastructure, including Medical Education Centres, postgraduate libraries, faculty structures, learning environments and digital platforms
Oversee a unified approach to postgraduate education support, including Faculty teams, trainer recognition, Postgraduate Education Support and Improvement functions, and data and intelligence systems
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Person specification
Qualifications and Knowledge
* Medical degree and current, substantive contract as an NHS Consultant in any specialty in Wales
* Demonstrable knowledge of educational theory and practice, particularly in relation to quality assurance
* Comprehensive understanding of postgraduate medical education and training, and the role of the GMC in relation to quality assurance of training
* Awareness and understanding of current national policy developments in postgraduate medical education and the NHS, particularly in relation to quality management systems
* Qualification in Medical Education
Experience
* Experience of developing strategic plans in the context of Postgraduate Medical Education
* Significant experience of working within the education and health sectors with academic and professional credibility and an outstanding record of achievement
* Experience in using Microsoft Office packages (Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint) in addition to e-mail and the internet
* Experience in developing and implementing quality assurance systems
* Experience of a management role in relation to postgraduate medical education and training
Skills and Attributes
* Ability to shape developments through active participation in, and leadership of, multi-professional teams and groups
* Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders at all levels, demonstrating the sensitivities required to balance and resolve tensions in working with a wide range of contacts both internally and externally at a senior level (including senior NHS staff at Medical Director and Chief Executive level)
* Excellent negotiating skills, and a proven ability to communicate professionally and to a high standard both orally and in writing
* Welsh Language Skills are desirable (levels 1) in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing in Welsh
