If you are a Development Underwriter who is tired of being told “computer says no”, this will be of interest.
This is an opportunity to join a highly respected, A+ rated UK specialty insurer that genuinely wants to trade. Not recklessly. Not stupidly. But intelligently, commercially and with intent.
More importantly, you would be working for an underwriting manager who backs their people. Someone who understands that growth in the regions does not come from hiding behind appetite guides. It comes from getting in front of brokers, understanding the risk, and finding a way to structure deals that make sense.
The business has delivered sustained, disciplined results. Now they want to increase market share across the regions. That means investment. It means backing underwriters. And it means giving you the room to write business.
This is specialty commercial lines business, traded through brokers. There is a Business Development team to support with pipeline and relationships, but make no mistake, you are in the box seat. This is a trading role. You will be visible in the market.
What you will be doing:
* Developing and executing a regional broker strategy
* Trading new and existing business within specialty commercial lines
* Looking at risks that may sit slightly outside appetite and working out how to structure them properly
* Building long term broker relationships, not just chasing quotes
* Taking ownership of performance, growth and profitability in your region
* Working closely with your underwriting manager to shape regional strategy
There are multiple hires across:
* Manchester and the North West
* Birmingham and the Midlands
* South East
This is not a back office underwriting role. It is not a tick box environment. You will be expected to think, to challenge, and to use judgement.
What they are looking for:
* Experience underwriting specialty commercial lines business
* A track record of developing broker relationships in your region
* Strong technical underwriting judgement
* Confidence to trade and negotiate
* Commercial awareness and a growth mindset
* Either an established market name or an ambitious underwriter ready to step up
Salary is genuinely open depending on who you are and what you bring.
* £50,000 to £65,000 for a strong up and comer with clear development potential
* £70,000 to £100,000 for an established Development Underwriter with a regional presence
On top of that:
* 15 to 20% bonus
* Strong overall benefits package
* Real flexibility around how and where you work
* Sensible split between home, office and being out with brokers
* A manager who will support decisions rather than second guess them
This will suit someone who enjoys the cut and thrust of trading but wants to do it in an environment where underwriting discipline still matters.
If you are well looked after where you are, that is fine. You probably should be. But if you are frustrated by lack of autonomy, shrinking appetite or a feeling that growth is just talk, it is worth a confidential conversation.
