Overview
Associate Physiologist within the Respiratory Investigations Unit (RIU) – diagnostic testing for in‑patients and out‑patients across multiple NHS sites including Wexham Park Hospital, King Edward VII Hospital, Heatherwood, Frimley Park Hospital, and the new Slough Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC). The role will be predominantly at the Slough CDC, with some site rotation.
The Slough CDC is a brand‑new, purpose‑built two‑floor facility in Slough, opening September 2025. It will operate 7 days a week and offer imaging, cardio‑respiratory, audiology, phlebotomy, and endoscopy services.
The Respiratory Physiology service runs from 8 am to 8 pm, Monday–Sunday. Flexible patterns and potentially 12‑hour days or weekend work may be required.
Key Responsibilities
* Perform full range of routine and specialist respiratory procedures under supervision, ensuring high‑quality diagnostic information and accurate reports.
* Routine investigations: dynamic lung volumes, maximal flow‑volume curves, FeNO measurement, response to bronchodilators, static lung volumes by helium dilution or whole‑body plethysmography, transfer factor for carbon monoxide (single‑breath technique), pulse oximetry, neuromuscular dysfunction/muscle pressure recordings, sleep study analysis, ear lobe capillary blood gas sampling.
* Specialist investigations: cardiopulmonary exercise testing, methacholine challenge testing, CPAP set‑up.
* Maintain technical competencies and keep up to date with developments in the specialty.
* Maintain or pursue registration with voluntary or statutory professional bodies (e.g. RCCP or HCPC).
* Maintain a professional portfolio, evidence practice updates and mandatory training (anaphylaxis, blood gas analyzer training).
* Participate in staff appraisal, develop personal development plans and objectives.
* Plan, provide and facilitate training and education for multi‑professional, learners and junior staff within the specialty.
* Act as expert resource for Respiratory Physiology within the Trust.
* Attend specialist national, regional and local conferences as agreed with the Service Manager.
