Job description
Our client, a leading player in the aerospace sector, is currently seeking a highly motivated and dynamic Optical Systems Functional Manager to join their team. This permanent role offers a unique blend of technical, managerial, and strategic responsibilities, focusing on delivering current and future optical payloads within the aerospace industry.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Line management of Optical Systems engineers including recruitment, performance, development, mentoring, and wellbeing
2. Ensure clear understanding of necessary skillsets and resource requirements for current and future project delivery
3. Manage team workload using resource planning tools and resolve potential resource clashes
4. Ensure adherence to engineering processes and guidelines in design, build, and test phases
5. Mentor and support team members to enhance technical capabilities and quality of work
6. Measure and improve the effectiveness of engineering processes and practices
7. Develop strategic roadmaps for Optical Payload products in alignment with company strategy
8. Support bid and tender activities by collaborating with Sales and Engineering teams
9. Maintain technical standards through peer reviews and consistent monitoring
10. Build relationships with Project Managers, Heads of Engineering, and other department Managers
Job Requirements:
11. Degree in Physics or Engineering, or equivalent qualification
12. Proven track record in Optical engineering, particularly in space optical instruments
13. Experience with optical instrumentation such as telescopes, spectrometers, and focal plane assemblies
14. Excellent people management skills and ability to motivate a team
15. Strong team player with collaborative working skills across sub-systems
16. Strategic thinking abilities with flexibility to adapt to changing project needs
17. Proficient in MS Office and knowledge of Microsoft Project
18. Clear communication and influencing skills
19. Well-organised with strong project and time management skills
20. Ability to delegate and empower team members
21. Pro-active and flexible with a results-focused attitude
