About the School

A well-established, friendly, and inclusive primary school in Wimbledon is seeking an enthusiastic and committed Year 1 Teacher to join their Key Stage 1 team on a full-time basis. The school is located in a desirable residential area and benefits from strong links with the local community, supportive parents, and a positive, child-centred ethos.

The school is known for its warm atmosphere, high expectations, and strong focus on both academic achievement and pupil wellbeing. Leadership is experienced, approachable, and genuinely invested in supporting staff at all stages of their careers. Staff morale is high, collaboration is encouraged, and teachers are given the time and support needed to deliver high-quality teaching.

The transition from EYFS into Key Stage 1 is a key priority for the school. As such, Year 1 teaching is carefully structured to blend play-based learning with more formal elements of the National Curriculum. Classrooms are well-resourced, engaging, and designed to support curiosity, independence, and a love of learning. Outdoor learning, practical activities, and talk-rich environments are all embedded into daily practice.

-----------------------------------

About the Role

As a Year 1 Class Teacher, you will take full responsibility for a Year 1 class, delivering engaging, well-structured lessons that support pupils as they move from the EYFS framework into the Key Stage 1 curriculum. This is a crucial stage in children’s educational development, where strong foundations in literacy, numeracy, and learning behaviours are established.

You will be expected to plan and deliver lessons that are creative, inclusive, and appropriately differentiated to meet the needs of all learners. A strong emphasis is placed on phonics, early reading, writing development, and number fluency, alongside continued development of social skills, independence, and emotional regulation.

This role would suit a reflective and enthusiastic teacher who understands the importance of a smooth transition from Reception into Year 1 and is confident in adapting teaching approaches to suit the developmental needs of young learners. You will work closely with teaching assistants, the KS1 team, EYFS colleagues, and senior leaders to ensure consistency and continuity in provision.

Both experienced teachers and Early Career Teachers (ECTs) are encouraged to apply. ECTs will benefit from a strong induction programme, mentoring, and regular opportunities for professional development.

-----------------------------------

Key Responsibilities

As the Year 1 Teacher, your responsibilities will include:

• Planning, delivering, and evaluating high-quality lessons in line with the National Curriculum
• Supporting pupils’ transition from EYFS into Key Stage 1 through developmentally appropriate teaching
• Delivering systematic phonics lessons and supporting early reading development
• Teaching writing, spelling, grammar, and punctuation in an engaging and structured way
• Developing pupils’ mathematical understanding through practical and problem-solving approaches
• Creating a positive, inclusive, and well-managed classroom environment
• Establishing clear routines and expectations to support behaviour and learning
• Assessing, tracking, and monitoring pupil progress using formative and summative assessment
• Differentiating learning to meet the needs of all pupils, including SEND, EAL, and higher-attaining learners
• Working effectively with teaching assistants to support learning in and out of the classroom
• Supporting pupils’ personal, social, and emotional development
• Building strong, positive relationships with pupils, parents, and carers
• Communicating clearly with parents regarding progress, behaviour, and wellbeing
• Contributing to staff meetings, planning sessions, and professional development activities
• Supporting school-wide initiatives and contributing positively to the wider school community
• Ensuring safeguarding, health, and safety procedures are followed at all times

-----------------------------------

The Ideal Candidate

The school is seeking a Year 1 Teacher who demonstrates:

• Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
• Experience teaching in Key Stage 1 (Year 1 experience desirable but not essential)
• A strong understanding of the Year 1 curriculum and early child development
• Confidence in delivering phonics and supporting early literacy
• A clear understanding of how to support children transitioning from EYFS
• High expectations for pupil achievement and behaviour
• Excellent classroom management and organisational skills
• A nurturing, patient, and consistent teaching approach
• Strong communication and teamwork skills
• A reflective mindset and willingness to adapt practice

The following would be advantageous but not essential:

• Experience teaching in an Outer London or diverse school setting
• Experience supporting pupils with SEND or speech and language needs
• Familiarity with phonics programmes such as Little Wandle or Read Write Inc.
• Subject leadership experience or interest

-----------------------------------

Training, Support & Development

• A comprehensive induction programme
• Ongoing mentoring and coaching
• High-quality CPD aligned with individual career goals
• Opportunities to observe best practice across the school
• Support from experienced Key Stage 1 and senior leaders
• Clear pathways for career progression, including subject leadership

-----------------------------------

Safeguarding Commitment

The school is fully committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. All appointments are subject to enhanced DBS checks, satisfactory references, and safeguarding training in line with statutory guidance.
