Role context
The Director of Business Development & Sales is responsible for the performance and growth of all Business Development and Sales activities for the ICI EMEA Business Unit (BU), with an annual orders target in excess of $100M. The role reports to the ICI Director of Strategy and Engagement, with a dotted line to the Managing Director ICI EMEA, and is a key member of ICI EMEA's Senior Leadership Team. We are looking for an established leader with in-depth knowledge of our portfolios within Electronic Warfare, Information Resilience, Mission System Integration and Robotic capabilities. The role involves defining future product and technology roadmaps as the voice of the customer, identifying and penetrating core target markets globally, driving sales revenues and expanding the customer base.
Responsibilities
* Lead the Business Development and Sales activities to successfully achieve the agreed Annual Operating Plan (AOP), and drive the strategic vision of the Business Unit through the annual 3-year Joint Strategic Planning cycle.
* Lead, mentor and support the BD & Sales team (approximately 10 staff). Provide leadership to achieve profitable growth in line with company vision, values and business plans.
* Accountability for setting and achieving the BU's P&L, annual order bookings and pipeline generation.
* Own and drive profitable growth by identifying and growing new routes to market, developing new market opportunities and supporting the Sales team in closing key opportunities.
* Operate in a matrixed environment with relationships across key customer representatives, strategic industry partners and internal stakeholders across multiple functions.
What you'll bring / Qualifications
* Strong commercial & business development knowledge (minimum 5 years) with extensive experience of working with the UK Government, MoD, GCHQ and other agencies, and knowledge of the UK Government's latest thinking on Defence and National Security.
* Deep understanding of customer requirements and user needs across the BU portfolio, with at least 5 years of dealing directly with international customers and cultures.
* Strong market-driven approach including market assessment, analysis and relationship development, with a proven track record of developing winning campaigns, effective capture plans and closing complex prospects.
* Existing network of customer and industry contacts at all levels, with knowledge of current and future capability acquisition programmes and procurement processes.
* Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with and lead internal and external senior customers across all levels.
* Gravitas, presence and negotiation skills commensurate with the role.
* Willingness to travel and work in a global team of professionals.
* Excellent written and verbal communications skills; confident presenter.
* Proven leadership skills with the ability to coach and mentor team members to success.
Additional Skills and Experience
* Strong international experience across Government and Commercial client bases, ideally including Five Eyes nations and Europe.
* Full lifecycle BD experience with practical use of formal BD tools and methodologies, including CRM and SAP.
* Strong financial and commercial acumen, including driving progress against Annual Plans and Orders pipeline.
* Self-motivated mentor with a passion for meeting customer and business needs.
* Good standard of technical and computer literacy.
* Business, Science or Engineering degree or equivalent qualification (e.g., HNC/HND).
