This post is for a Locum Consultant in Dermatology.
This is a whole‑time fixed‑term 12‑month post offering an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated medic to join a dynamic, rapidly expanding team delivering multidisciplinary acute care in Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals.
Applicants are required to hold Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (UK or equivalent qualifications), and to be fully registered with the General Medical Council via one of the following:
Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) – the proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of the interview
Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) – CESR candidates must have written GMC confirmation upon successful application
Main duties of the job
This post holder will be employed for a full time post (10PA), although consideration will be given to candidates who are planning to work less than full time.
Provision of ward consultations for inpatients is necessary according to requirements.
Participation in the management structure of the Medical Division.
Proposed job plan
4 out‑patient clinics per week (three general dermatology, one skin cancer)
1 minor surgery session per week (likely to be held at St Helens)
0.5 session for ward referrals and MDT
2 sessions for direct patient administration (including time allocated for Advice & Guidance)
1 session for continuing professional development “Grand Round” (Broadgreen Hospital three weeks per month / Clatterbridge once monthly)
1.5 sessions for teaching/audit/research/clinical management/non‑clinical
Clinic templates are in accordance with the guidelines issued by the British Association of Dermatologists. A typical clinic consists of 5 new patients, 10 follow‑up patients. There is no on‑call commitment.
This post has 2.5 SPA.
Job responsibilities Clinical Responsibilities
Care of all patients referred by their GP.
Care of all patients referred by the Emergency Medicine Department.
Care of all patients referred by internal & external specialities.
Professional Responsibilities
Minor skin surgery operations.
Urgent and routine GP referrals.
In‑patient referrals and referrals from other specialities.
Job plan in line with new consultant contract and BAD guidelines.
4 clinics per week (three general, one skin cancer) – negotiable based on service needs and applicant specialist interests.
Timing and location of clinics dependent on service needs at commencement.
Weekly continuing professional development (CPD) session at Broadgreen or Clatterbridge Hospital (once per month at Clatterbridge) – includes Dermatology Grand Round, audits and journal clubs. Travel time included.
Monthly departmental meeting for local audit, teaching, service planning and discussion of management issues.
Monthly histopathology meeting attended by all dermatology consultants and histopathology colleague to discuss clinic‑pathological correlation.
Non‑clinical
Training of Speciality Trainees within the department.
Development of Nurse Specialists role.
Undertake and supervise Audit/Quality improvement projects and CME.
Attend relevant MDT meetings.
Attend weekly MDT specialty meetings including monthly Clinical Governance Meeting.
Development and promotion of evidence‑based practice and guidelines.
Active contribution to departmental Clinical Governance structure.
Multi‑disciplinary team working and leadership.
Relevant participation in management.
Other appropriate duties and responsibilities.
No on‑call commitments.
Person Specification Qualifications
Full GMC registration at the time of appointment.
MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
MRCP or equivalent medical qualification.
MD/PhD or equivalent medical qualification.
Knowledge & Experience
Evidence of achievement of competencies by time of appointment in line with DMC standards/Good Medical Practice.
Clinical training and experience to manage, supervise and offer expert clinical opinion on patients presenting to Dermatology Department.
Experience of supervising doctors and practitioners with ability to teach clinical and practical skills.
Evidence of appropriate teaching experience.
Demonstrated ability to undertake robust audit within team structure.
Evidence of feedback or peer review on these skills.
Evidence of formally supervising medical students, F1, F2, ACCS and specialist trainees.
Evidence of relevant research (presentations, publications in peer‑reviewed journals).
The ability to apply outcomes to clinical problems.
