Therapy Healthcare Assistant - In-Patient Unit

Norfolk Community Health and Care NHS Trust are an integrated NHS and social care Trust offering opportunities for a Band 3 Therapy Assistant to work on the In-patient unit at North Walsham hospital.

We would welcome applicants with a "can do" attitude who reflect the values (compassion, creativity and community) and behaviours of the organisation. You will work as part of the therapy team on the In-patient unit.

We are keen to enable our patients to achieve optimum function and independence and quality of life. You will play a key part in this along with your nursing and therapy colleagues. To assist you with this you will receive support and development through in service training, regular appraisals, a personal development plan and clinical supervision.

You must be self-motivated, able to demonstrate sound clinical reasoning skills and have good communication skills. Applicants should have a positive enthusiastic approach to working in an in-patient setting.

Main duties of the job

You will be part of the Therapy team on the ward and will support registered Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists and Band 4 Assistant Practitioners.

Your main duties will be to review patient mobility, transfers, personal activities of daily living and exercise programmes, as appropriate. You will report patient progressions to the team.

Job responsibilities

* Apply competency based treatment techniques/care to patients with specific conditions under the supervision of a qualified practitioner, following a prescribed treatment/care plan.
* Ensure patient held records are completed for each intervention, and that SystmOne inputting is completed on a daily basis
* Make basic judgements on patients response to prescribed treatment/care plans, and report findings to a qualified practitioner.
* Liaise with other health care professionals as required.
* Overcome barriers to understanding, e.g. patients with hearing or cognitive impairment.
* Communicate with patients/ and their families by exchanging factual information, reassurance, tact and empathy.
* Establish and maintain appropriate working relationships with colleagues, patients, carers and other health care professionals.
* Use appropriate methods of communication with patients, families and carers in order to maximise rehabilitation and understand their conditions. A variety of communication methods may be required
* Demonstrate dexterity and coordination when undertaking treatment of patients where accuracy is important, e.g., supervising transfers, and passive exercises.
* Be responsible for ensuring equipment is used safely, following relevant training, and that it is maintained appropriately.
* Contribute to the requisitioning of supplies and equipment through electronic ordering systems.
* Work predominantly independently on specified tasks, with regular clinical support and supervision by a qualified practitioner.
* Work with qualified practitioners with group work/clinics as required.
* Demonstrate an awareness and understanding of consent, and gain consent, and gain consent as appropriate following organisational policies.
* Share responsibility for maintaining store cupboards, pool cars, cleaning specialist equipment and general housekeeping tasks .
* Share responsibility of indirect patient contact tasks, such as, answering phones, arranging appointments, processing referrals and inputting activity data.
* Undertake health promotion/education as required, e.g. smoking cessation, falls diet, and exercise etc.
* Will be exposed to bodily fluids, infected material, blood products on a daily basis, therefore must utilise universal precautions and adhere to infection control policies.
* Demonstrate basic IT (texting, internet and email) and standard keyboard skills.


Person Specification


Qualifications

* NVQ 2 in health and social care or equivalent
* NVQ 3 in care


Experience

* Experience or working with the general public
* Experience of working within a Healthcare setting
* Evidence of ongoing learning
* Experience of working in people's homes or in an in-patient setting
* Experience of working with people at the End of life


Skills, Knowledge and Ability

* Knowledge of additional specialist areas through in-house training & short courses
* Highly motivated
* Knowledge of multi-disciplinary team roles.
* Experience of working in a community setting or in-patient setting

* Manoeuvre patients using handling aids

* Must have a Full UK driving licence and have access to a vehicle
