Joining Arup
We work with infrastructure developers, property companies, governments and landowners to embed effective management of land, air and water through planning, delivery and operation of new and retrofit projects. Our service is comprehensive, including air quality, biodiversity, noise, community engagement, environmental assessment and management, land quality, water, resources and waste, and the maintenance and protection of historic environments.
“Working at Arup, I engage with meaningful projects to improve the water environment. I work with local communities in Cardiff, across Wales, and around the world. The whole organisation has a common interest in developing well-rounded solutions to social and environmental challenges, which makes Arup a great place to work.”
The Opportunity
We’re looking for a Senior or Principal Environmental Consultant at Arup, that will play a pivotal role in delivering projects that make a tangible difference to communities and the environment. Your expertise will help shape sustainable solutions across the water sector, ensuring our projects meet regulatory requirements and deliver long-term value.
You will work on a diverse portfolio of projects under major water frameworks, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and clients to address environmental challenges. This is an opportunity to influence outcomes that matter, while operating in a dynamic, flexible environment where proactive thinking is encouraged.
What you’ll do
In this role, you’ll work closely with client teams and a wide range of specialist colleagues to shape, develop and deliver Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA), ensuring robust reporting and full regulatory compliance. You’ll collaborate across multidisciplinary teams to integrate environmental considerations into project planning and design, helping drive effective solutions to complex environmental challenges. A key part of your work will be leading the preparation and coordination of EIA reports, ensuring they meet regulatory requirements and client expectations while adding value through thoughtful enhancements and appropriate mitigation measures.
You’ll build strong relationships with regulators, stakeholders and clients to support compliance with environmental standards and guide projects through approval processes. Alongside this, you’ll provide expert advice on environmental policy, regulations and best practice, while monitoring and reporting on the implementation of environmental management plans and adherence to EIA conditions throughout the project lifecycle.
What we’re looking for
1. Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, Engineering, or a related field.
2. Full membership of an appropriate institute (e.g. ISEP, CIWEM or equivalent).
3. Proven track record of managing and delivering complex projects in the water sector.
4. Strong knowledge of environmental regulations and sustainability practices. Experience of the Development Consent Order consenting regime is desirable but not essential.
