About The Role
As Head of Physical Performance, you will be responsible for planning, delivering and monitoring all aspects of physical preparation, load management and performance conditioning for the first team squad.
Working closely with the Head Coach, Medical and Performance staff, you will play a key role in optimising player availability, minimising injury risk, and maximising on-pitch performance.
This is a leadership role requiring a strong understanding of elite football environments, a collaborative mindset, and a passion for innovation and continuous improvement.
• Lead and oversee all aspects of sports science provision for the first team.
• Design and implement periodised conditioning programmes aligned with team objectives.
• Monitor and analyse player load, recovery, and readiness using GPS and other performance technologies.
• Deliver data-driven insights to inform training, recovery and return-to-play strategies.
• Collaborate with medical, coaching and analysis staff to support holistic player development.
• Lead and mentor sports science staff across the club pathway, ensuring alignment with first team methodology.
• Contribute to the club's long-term performance strategy and support ongoing research and innovation.
About The Candidate
Knowledge, Skills & Experience
• BSc and MSc in Sports Science or a related field.
• BASES accreditation and/or UKSCA accreditation (or working towards).
• Minimum 3 years' experience in a similar role within professional football (Championship or higher desirable).
• Excellent understanding of load management, injury prevention, and high performance monitoring systems (e.g. GPS, force plates, vald).
• Strong leadership, communication, and team collaboration skills.
• Ability to thrive in a high-performance, results-driven environment.
Desirable
• ISAK Accreditation
• Valid Intermediate Trauma Medical Management in Football (ITMMiF).
• In depth knowledge of the physiological demands of elite football;
• Experience of leading, managing and developing high performing multidisciplinary teams that deliver consistently high standards.
Skills & Behaviours
Technical Skills
• Expertise in applied GPS, HR monitoring, and athlete management systems(e.g., STATSports, Power BI, VALD).
• Strong knowledge of strength and conditioning principles, load monitoring, and injury risk management.
• Data-literate with the ability to visualise and communicate insights effectively.
• Proficient in performance analysis tools, Microsoft Excel, and sports science software platforms.
