Job Description
LOCATION: Manchester / Leeds / Leicester or Edinburgh
We are seeking a qualified and enthusiastic Principal Mechanical Building Services Engineer to support and develop our building services team across multiple locations. The successful candidate will lead and deliver medium to high complexity projects independently or under supervision, providing expert advice to clients and managing client relationships to secure new work. You should have experience leading or demonstrating the ability to lead a team of less experienced engineers, with line management responsibilities being a plus.
Project work will span various sectors including life sciences, defence, education, commercial, residential, renewable energy, industrial, retail, healthcare, and leisure, in both public and private domains. Your responsibilities include all aspects of mechanical design delivery, such as calculations, drawings, specifications, reports, site surveys, construction duties, and client liaison. Producing and reviewing mechanical design drawings and using Autodesk Revit MEP are key parts of the role, with training provided if needed.
You will be passionate about delivering projects on time and within scope, developing strong client relationships, managing your workload, and supporting team planning. Key responsibilities include:
1. Producing and reviewing detailed design calculations.
2. Creating specifications and plant schedules.
3. Developing design notes, basis of design, and reports complying with standards.
4. Producing design drawings from concept to detailed design.
5. Conducting site surveys and inspections.
6. Mentoring junior to intermediate engineers.
7. Contributing to estimates and bid processes.
8. Supporting resource planning and team workload management.
Requirements include an accredited Building Services or Mechanical Engineering degree, with Chartered status or working towards it preferred. Candidates should have extensive experience managing and delivering mechanical building services projects, with proficiency in digital tools like AutoCAD, Revit, IES, NBS, and Microsoft Office. Knowledge of energy conservation, sustainability, renewable technologies, and relevant legislation is essential. Strong communication, negotiation, report writing, and project management skills are required, along with the ability to operate proactively and independently.
