Purpose of the role
We have a great opportunity for a Project Ganger to join the team working predominantly nights within the Asset Contracting business unit, you will play a key role in supporting the successful delivery of the National Highways Area 9 Maintenance and Response contract. Based at Perry Barr Depot, B42 2AN, you will contribute to the management and execution of highway maintenance and minor works across a strategically critical road network spanning multiple counties. This role is focused on ensuring operational delivery meets client expectations while maintaining full compliance with quality standards, health and safety requirements, and environmental best practice. You will support the effective use of resources, contribute to financial performance in line with operational forecasts, and help ensure all works are delivered safely, efficiently, and to a high standard.
Overtime is available including occasional weekend work.
Main Responsibilities
As a Project Ganger you will lead day‑to‑day site operations, ensuring work is delivered safely, efficiently, and in line with programme requirements. A key part of the role will be delivering start‑of‑shift briefings, conducting site inductions for both internal teams and supply chain partners, and maintaining strong on‑site supervision of gangs and subcontractors. You will be responsible for ensuring full compliance with health and safety procedures, including adherence to method statements, risk assessments, and CDM regulations, while actively promoting a positive safety culture. The role also involves coordinating labour, plant, and materials, monitoring progress on site, and maintaining accurate records, including completing end‑of‑shift reports and updating job status systems such as Confirm. Strong communication with internal teams, clients, and stakeholders will be essential, alongside ensuring all work meets the required quality standards and is completed on time.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have practical experience within the highways maintenance or construction sector, with a solid understanding of operational delivery and site supervision. You will bring experience of managing teams and subcontractors, along with the ability to plan, organise, and allocate resources effectively to meet performance targets. You will hold relevant industry qualifications such as CSCS, SMSTS or SSSTS along with a full UK driving licence. A good understanding of highways legislation, including the Road Traffic Act, and familiarity with systems such as Confirm will be important. Strong financial awareness, including the ability to support budget control and manage variations, is also desirable. You will be highly organised, detail‑oriented, and capable of managing competing priorities in a fast‑paced environment. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential, enabling you to engage effectively with stakeholders at all levels. A proactive and adaptable approach, combined with a commitment to high standards, safety, and teamwork, will be key to success in this role.

* A salary of 16.40 hourly (Enhanced pay rates are offered for night shifts and overtime)
