Concrete Youth is a charity dedicated to enriching the lives of people labelled with profound and multiple learning disabilities through high-quality cultural provision. Our work includes award-winning sensory theatre productions, education and engagement programmes, and international outreach. Since 2019, our live sensory work has reached over 10,500 audience members across five continents.
About Blueprint
Blueprint is a pioneering, multi-phase sensory theatre project developed by Concrete Youth in collaboration with individuals labelled with profound and multiple learning disabilities. Created in conjunction with our Chief Executive & Artistic Director Daniel Swift’s doctoral research, the project aims to establish a new model for multi-version sensory theatre—flexible, co-created, and tailored to how our audience engages with theatre.
Blueprint seeks to transform sector understanding of inclusive practice. It represents a bold step forward in how sensory theatre is created, shared, and experienced. This project is supported by public funding from Arts Council England.
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Creative Access Consultant to support Blueprint, ensuring that creative access principles are embedded into both the artistic concept and delivery of the project. The successful candidate will work closely with the creative team to develop access design that is bespoke, artistically integrated, and responsive to the needs of audiences labelled with profound and multiple learning disabilities. They will also advise on accessible working practices throughout the project to promote inclusivity on and off stage.
Responsibilities
1. Lead on the creative integration of access across the project’s design and delivery.
2. Provide expert advice on accessible working practices during development.
3. Guide the embedding of creative access tools such as captioning, sound design, physical storytelling, sensory materials, and visual communication.
4. Ensure access design aligns with and enhances the creative and sensory experience.
5. Collaborate with the director, composer, and sensory artists throughout the project.
6. Contribute feedback during creative review sessions.
7. Recommend practical adaptations based on audience needs.
Person Specification
* Extensive experience in sensory theatre and working with audiences labelled with profound and multiple learning disabilities.
* Deep understanding of creative access principles and their artistic integration.
* Experience collaborating with artistic teams at early development stages.
* Knowledge of a broad range of access tools and strategies in live performance.
* Confident communicator advocating for inclusive practices as part of the theatre-making process.
* Collaborative, responsive, and proactive approach.
Fee
£700 per week for 3 weeks, plus travel, accommodation, per diems, and holiday pay. Concrete Youth operates a 4-day working week.
Key Dates
* Interviews: 5th & 6th June via Zoom (booking an appointment will be arranged).
* Phase 1: 16th – 27th June 2025 in Hull (dates TBC).
* Phase 2: 14th – 17th July 2025 (dates TBC).
* Note: Dates may slightly change. R&D in autumn 2025, production in spring 2026, with potential extension based on performance.
