Locum Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology with specific interest in Urogynaecology and/or Fetal Medicine
An opportunity has arisen for a Locum Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist at Walsall Manor Hospital for a one-year period starting October 2025.
The post requires a candidate with a specific interest in Urogynaecology and/or Fetal Medicine, capable of managing all Obstetrics and Gynaecology emergencies in an on-call role. Experience in infertility management is desirable. The duties include resident and non-resident on-call responsibilities, with resident cover until 17:30 on weekdays and twice daily during weekends to support twice-daily consultant-led ward rounds. The on-call team is supported by a middle grade doctor (ST3 or above) and junior trainees.
Applicants must possess full GMC registration with a license to practice, MRCOG or an equivalent specialist qualification, relevant CCT or equivalent (to be confirmed by PMETB/GMC by the Advisory Appointments Committee date), and be on the GMC Specialist Register or eligible within six months of the appointment.
All applicants, regardless of country of origin, must demonstrate sufficient English communication skills to perform the role effectively during the selection process.
The post involves covering all obstetric and gynecological emergencies, with duties including resident and non-resident on-call shifts. Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust is the sole provider of NHS acute care in Walsall, serving a population of approximately 287,000. The hospital offers a comprehensive range of services, including a state-of-the-art Critical Care Unit, Neonatal Unit, Obstetric Theatre, and a newly developed Urgent and Emergency Care Centre.
The Trust also provides extensive community health services across numerous sites, including health centres and GP surgeries, offering home-based care and rapid response services to support long-term and elderly patients to remain in their homes.
General Duties
1. Full responsibility for patient care, including administrative duties.
2. Leadership and development of services in line with Trust plans.
3. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and senior management.
4. Develop personal interests and subspecialties within the field, including participation in research.
5. Manage doctors in training professionally.
6. Coordinate cover during leave or absence, ensuring minimal disruption to services.
On-call duties require arrival at 8:30 for handover during weekdays. Weekend resident coverage includes 8:30-13:00 and 19:30-21:30 to facilitate ward rounds. The role involves performing emergency gynecological procedures independently and maintaining surgical skills through elective lists and hot week schedules (1:14). Support and guidance from colleagues are available, with a buddy system initially in place.
