As an Associate Practitioner in histology, the post holder will assist in the smooth operation of the section to deliver a specialised, diagnostic service contributing to patient care.
Technical Responsibilities
* Participate in routine cellular pathology rotas across all areas of the laboratory, including:
o Specimen reception
o Cut‑up assist
o Embedding
o Microtomy
o Haematoxylin & Eosin (H&E) staining
o Internal Quality Control (IQC)
o Specimen decalcification
o Special stains
o Immunohistochemistry
* Follow SOPs at all times.
* Participate in departmental training programmes, gaining competence in all areas of routine cellular pathology.
* Receive, label and prepare specimens prior to processing; check sample labelling validity and assist specification reception when required.
* Troubleshoot simple laboratory problems (mislabelled samples, poor performing assays/equipment, queries from service users) seeking advice from senior staff.
* Adhere to Trust policy regarding data protection, information governance and freedom of information.
* Adhere to Trust and departmental health & safety policy, including wearing PPE when required.
* Maintain and promote high standards of health & safety; dispose of specimens and materials per H&S guidelines.
* Support Health & Safety Leads, Quality Lead, and Training Lead in audit, EQA, training programmes.
* Report and remedy any service delivery failures; report risks, clinical and non‑clinical incidents via DATIX.
* Support MLAs, trainee staff, and other practitioners.
* Package and send samples for referral; maintain appropriate storage and disposal.
* Perform routine operative maintenance and corrective maintenance of laboratory instruments.
* Undertake manual, semi‑automated and fully automated laboratory investigations and prepare histology tissue slides.
* Progress to performing transfer of RCPATH Category A specimens after training and competency assessment.
* Prepare reagents; conduct weekly/monthly stock control of laboratory supplies.
