Offer description

Join the team

The Science Research Foundation (SRF) Limited is looking for a proactive, hands-on Technical Lab Manager to join our team at a critical stage of expansion and transition. This is a rare opportunity to join the team at a cutting-edge facility supporting technology companies in the heart of Bristol.

As the Technical Lab Manager, you'll initially be based at the Quantum Technologies Innovation Centre playing a key role in supporting lab operations. Looking ahead, this role will be pivotal in the transition to the University of Bristol's new Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus, opening in September 2026.

The new Bristol Innovations Zone (BIZ) will become a gateway for start-ups, scale-ups, and industry partners to collaborate with the University on high-impact innovation, particularly in areas like quantum, photonics and AI.

You'll help define and implement the technical, safety, and operational systems that will underpin the new space—building on your practical lab experience to create scalable, resilient infrastructure in a fast-paced innovation environment. This role will suit a scientifically trained professional—likely from a photonics, quantum, or electronics background—who is ready to take ownership of labs and equipment management and define the future state of technical support in our new facility. You'll work across a wide range of lab-based hazards and equipment, often independently, managing statutory compliance, day-to-day lab support, and project delivery. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who has recently been at the bench, is familiar with lab realities (happy to roll your sleeves up and muck in), and is ready to step into a broader operational role.

About SRF

SRF, a wholly owned subsidiary of the University of Bristol, plays a central role in delivering innovation, business support, and commercialisation services aligned to the University's strategy. Currently this includes three established innovation hubs within Bristol:

· Quantum Technologies Innovation Centre (QTIC) is a 3,000ft² dedicated facility in the Faculty of Science and Engineering in 1 Cathedral Square. It has quantum/deep tech member companies and provides them with lab and office space, and specialist equipment.

· SETsquared Bristol is the University of Bristol's incubation programme for tech start-ups. It is part of the award-winning SETsquared Partnership.

· Engine Shed is a 28,000ft² innovation hub located in a heritage building next to Temple Meads station. It provides membership, training and event space to local companies and has a prominent role in the City's thriving innovation ecosystem.

As Technical Lab Manager, you will provide:

Project & Facilities Management

· Identify and support the procurement of new equipment across a broad range of deep tech sectors

· Project manage lab arrangements and equipment installations

· Liaise with wider building facility teams and stakeholders to support statutory compliance and Planned Preventive Maintenance (PPM) and building-level fire risk assessments

Lab Statutory & Risk Management

· Ensure statutory and industry guidance compliance for all relevant lab hazards.

· Produce and review risk assessments

· Maintain and develop SOPs and Safe Systems of Work

· Fulfil duty of care obligations related to co-located companies and activities

Lab Technical Support

· Manage and track lab equipment (usage, calibration, repair) and oversee orders of consumables

· Provide training to users and maintain training records & documentation

· Oversee daily lab upkeep and support technician-led services on specialist equipment

· Coordinate hazardous waste collection and ensure statutory documentation is in place

· Act as a generalist technical expert across a broad range of lab equipment and techniques

What we're looking for

Essential:

· Background in scientific discipline (ideally photonics, quantum, or electronics-related) – ideally PhD or MSc level

· At least 2 years' industry experience working across multidisciplinary scientific environments and comfortable working with a broad range of lab hazards and equipment types

· Excellent communication skills

· Self-motivated and resourceful: able to identify problems, find solutions, and work with minimal oversight

Desirable:

· NEBOSH National General Certificate or equivalent health & safety knowledge

· Familiarity with Deep Tech sector organisations, ranging from SMEs to large corporates

Application deadline: 13th October 11:59pm local time

Interviews: 23rd October

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: £40,000.00-£45,000.00 per year
